Greg
Sandlin and Jason Van Buskirk Win 2006 Oklahoma Open in Enid and Danny Hoel
Celebrates
27-28 May 2006 - Enid, OK - The Oklahoma tour
usually finds itself in Ft. Smith, Arkansas during the Memorial Day
Weekend for the Arkansas State Championship, but this year, since
the skipped year for the Arkansas State Championship, Enid became
the host course for the 2006 Oklahoma Open. The Open was the site
where a milestone was reached.
Danny Hoel was
recognized for making Oklahoma tour’s 400th consecutive tournament.
Dating back to June 9, 1984, Danny has not missed an Oklahoma Tour
event. Danny took over as tour director in 1991, and has been the
driving force for keeping the tour together in Oklahoma.

As is par for the course the heat and winds decided
to join the putters in Enid for a tough course and tough conditions
to challenge all the putters who attended. After day one, five
rounds on course 2, the pro division had
Greg Sandlin in
the lead with a 150 and
Chris Enders just
10 strokes behind at 160.
In the amateur division,
Jason VanBuskirk
would take an early lead with 158.
Scott Schuler
was in second place with a 161 just one stroke ahead of
John Lozier.
Day two the putters moved over to course 1 for four
more rounds of putting with heat and wind. Greg Sandlin was able to
hold of Chris Enders even though Chris started with two strong
rounds of 30 to pull within 4 strokes of Greg. Greg did manage to
finish strong with a 29 and 31 to close off Chris’ charge and win
the Oklahoma Open with a 276. Greg Sandlin, Chris Enders and
Steve Armstrong
all received state qualifying spots.
In the amateurs, Jason was in the lead in last years
open and barely edge out John to take it last year in Lawton. This
year would be similar in that Jason would find himself fighting off
a second day charge from John Lozier. Jason held on for the win with
a 282 just 2 strokes ahead of John’s 284. Jason Van Buskirk
successfully defended his Oklahoma Open title. State qualification
spots went to Jason VanBuskirk, John Lozier, Scott Schuler and Danny
Hoel.

Lee Messinger takes pro division while Greg Cole wins in the APA
division
13 May 2006 - Ft. Worth, Westside - Saturday in Ft.
Worth on the Westside location the temperature went up and so did
the degree of difficulty on each hole. It also did not help that the
"Blue Angels" were buzzing the course.
Lee Messinger was the solo
Pro ready to play and shot the lowest score of the day to take the
professional division.
The Oklahoma Tour traveled to Ft. Worth Texas this
weekend for a one day shootout on the tough West Side course. After
ending regulation play tied at 98, tour veteran
Greg Cole
defeated Danny Hoel
in an 18 hole playoff (30-34) for his first win since 2003 on this
same course.
Jason VanBuskirk fired the low round of the day in the opening
round, taking the lead at 8 under par. Hoel was two strokes back at
6 under par, with Cole in at 3 under par. With the US Navy's Blue
Angel's flying overhead and temperatures rising, each hole became
increasing more difficult to hit, and second round scores were
significantly higher for most of the field.
VanBuskirk with a second round 4 under par still
held the 36 hole lead at 60, with a seemingly insurmountable 5
stroke lead over Cole and Hoel at 65. Disaster would strike
VanBuskirk in the final round however, and a pair of final round 3
under pars from Cole and Hoel moved them into a tie for the top spot
at 98, clipping VanBuskirk by a thin stroke. In the 18 hole playoff
that followed, Cole got his second wind, defeating Hoel 30-34 for
the win. One Oklahoma State qualification spots went to Greg Cole in
medal play. In match play, Jason VanBuskirk beat
Trevor Lewin
5-4 and Jimmy
VanBuskirk defeated
Ken Stanfill
2-1 for the qualification spots.
