Kevin
Lacey Posts Fourth Victory of 2007 NPT Season in Switzer Classic
1 July 2007 - Springfield, OH -
Kevin Lacey has
been a part-time player on state tours in recent years. But when he
plays, he often wins.
|

Kevin Lacey
2007 Switzer Classic Champion |
Lacey has played every tournament on the Northern Putting
Tour this season, totaling eight. And he was won four of them,
the most recent the Switzer Classic on the challenging Course 1.
Lacey won $270 for his efforts in the tourney, which was a
six-round major featuring 23 pros, the largest turnout of the
season.
He had to come from way back to do it, as Lacey shot 91 in
the first three rounds of the tourney, tying him for 14th place.
He was 10 strokes behind leader
Dave Nutini,
who was playing his first tour weekend since 2005.
Nutini, the 2002 Great Lakes Tour champion, shot an
impressive 81, leading by four strokes over a quintet of
competitors. That included PPA Hall of Fame member
Roger Beckerman,
1990 National Champion
Steve Haeseker,
2006 NPT Medal Play Champion
Robb Titchell,
2005 Great Lakes Tour Champion
John Bambling
and 2002 APA Northern Open winner
James Weber.
Beckerman, Haeseker and Titchell were in the same threesome to
start the tourney.
However, none of those six players would be in the top three
at tourney’s end. All except Haeseker would end up tied for
fourth with a 176 as scoring went up after the lunch break.
After 12 players broke 90 during the first three rounds, only
three pros could do it in the second half.
Those were the top three finishers, as Lacey shot an 82 to
finish at 173.
Peter Neumann came in second at 174 (88 second half), and
Bennie Williams
finished third with 175 (88).
The APA tourney featured little drama, as Springfield local
Scott
Copeland easily claimed the title to become the first
two-time winner on the NPT this season.
Copeland shot a 167 to beat Lacey’s winning pro score by six
shots. Josh
Garrison finished eight strokes back at 175. 2006 NPT Medal
Play Champion
Anthony
Russell and Saturday’s tourney winner
Anthony Amick
tied for third at 177.

John
Ventura Posts 78 and Three Stroke Victory in 2007 Springfield Open
30 June 2007 - Springfield, OH -
John Ventura did not putt in any PPA events during the 2006
season but the veteran Fairfield, Ohio pro was convinced to return
to the tour this season. He was glad he did after a virtuoso
performance in the Springfield Open on Course 1. Ventura won the
three-round tournament to open the weekend on the Northern Putting
Tour.
|

John Ventura
2007 Springfield Open Champion |
He did it with a sizzling 78, one off the course record for
three rounds. Ventura easily rolled to a three-stroke win over
three-time 2007 winner
Kevin Lacey,
claiming his first solo state tour win in three years. Northern
Ohio pros Harry
Sykes and
Scott Buddie were in a different zip code from them, sharing
third place with an 87.
The amateur division featured an exciting finish, as
Anthony Amick,
playing his first tour event since 2004, shot an 87 to pull out
his first state win in nearly four years. Amick won by one
stroke over John
Kropinak and two over
Leroy Lacey
and Kyle Poole.
Two others,
Mike Bell and
Scott
Copeland, tied for fifth with 90.

Roger Beckerman Breaks Into Winner's Column in 2007 with Victory
in Southport
3 June 2007 - Southport, IN - The 2007 Northern Putting Tour
season had been a rough one for
Roger Beckerman.
Coming off a 2006 season where he won three events on the NPT and
was in contention for Player of the Year honors, the PPA Hall of
Fame member uncharacteristically stumbled out of the blocks to open
this season. He had finished an average of 14th place in four
tournaments and had beaten two players combined the last three
tourneys.
|

Roger Beckerman |
In Saturday's first tournament of the NPT weekend on Course 3
in Southport, Beckerman was on his way to another sub par
tourney before finishing with a 22 to tie for second place. That
burst of confidence carried over to Sunday, as 15 pros convened
for the third annual Bill Hammons Memorial on the same Course 3.
The tourney started with a moment of silence for Hammons, the
longtime Indianapolis APA member who passed away from cancer.
When the tourney ended, Beckerman had shot solid rounds of
27-26-23-26 to finish with a 102 and a three-stroke victory.
Kevin Lacey
finished in second with 105. Third-place
Jerry Pinotti
was five strokes further back with 110. Lefties
James Weber and
Charlie
Greenwalt tied for fourth.
Peter Neumann
was sixth and John
Ventura seventh to claim the last cash spot. Lacey and
Greenwalt claimed their NPT spots for the match play finals.
In the amateur division, it was Southport local
Rick
Ossenfort, playing his first weekend on tour, winning his
first-ever title with a 109, 35 under par. Ossenfort led from
wire to wire, grabbing a four-stroke lead over
Josh Garrison
and Anthony
Russell entering the final round with a 79. Ossenfort shot
30 in the final round to hold off the contenders, who were not
able to make a serious run. Garrison and
Brandon Davis
tied for second with 113.
John Watkins
was fourth and
Kyle Poole fifth. Poole claimed his spot for the NPT match
play finals.
The NPT takes four weeks off before traveling to Springfield,
Ohio June 30 and July 1.

Nate Nichols Earns His Sixth Professional Victory on Southport,
IN Course
2 June 2007 - Southport, IN -
Nate Nichols' home
course is Columbus, Ind., but the beautiful 54-hole facility in
Southport, Ind., just south of Indianapolis, has been a second home
to the young professional putter. The Columbus resident won the
first tournament of the weekend as the Northern Putting Tour resumed
play at Southport.
|

Nate Nichols |
Nichols fired a 79, 29 under par, to claim a three-stroke win
in the Terry Ferguson Classic. It was his sixth pro tourney win
at Southport and second on the Course 3 layout. It is also the
second time Nichols has won a tournament named after Ferguson,
the course owner.
In the amateur division, it was
Scott
McCutchen of Greenfield, Ind. winning his first tour event
in four years. A part-time player on the NPT, McCutchen fired a
26 in the final to post an 85, coming from three strokes behind
to earn the win.
Josh Garrison,
the two-round leader at 56, tied for second with an 86 with 2006
NPT Medal Play Champion
Anthony
Russell.

Kevin Lacey Earns Third Victory of 2007 NPT Season with Playoff
Victory over O'Brien
6 May 2007 - Hamilton, OH - For the third time in four
tournaments this season, a playoff was needed to determine the
professional winner on the Northern Putting Tour. And for the third
time this season,
Kevin Lacey claimed
a title on the NPT. Lacey beat
Tom O’Brien in an 18-hole playoff to win the Western Ohio
Classic on Course 2 at the Hamilton, Ohio location Sunday, May 6.
|

Kevin Lacey aces the ninth hole in the
playoff against Tom O'Brien. |
Lacey swept the weekend’s events and claimed his third
consecutive NPT win on Course 2. He overcame pain to do it, as he
was scheduled to undergo knee surgery two days later.
In the amateur division, it was Hamilton locals claiming the top
two spots, as veteran
Ted Cain shot a 22-under par 122 to edge Cincinnati teenager
Brandon Davis
by two strokes.
Cain, who has been playing at the Hamilton course since the early
1960’s, was the 2004 APA state champion in the former Great Lakes
Tour. He won his third state tournament on the Course 2 layout, as
his steady rounds of 30-30-31-31 were enough to hold off a tightly
bunched field.
The Northern Putting Tour returns to action June 2-3, playing
Course 3 in Southport, Ind. The weekend includes the Bill
Hammons Memorial Sunday, June 3.

different types of courses. His home course of Hamilton, Ohio has
been no different, as Lacey continued his recent dominance on the
Course 2 layout on Saturday, May 5.

Kevin Lacey
2004 Great Lakes Tour Champion |
Lacey, the winner of the 2004 Great Lakes Tour championship on
that course and the last state tournament on Course 2, the 2006 NPT
Queen City Classic, won his second tournament in three tries on the
2007 Northern Putting Tour.
Lacey shot an 84, 24 under par, to win the Ohio Open on a
beautiful, sunny day in Hamilton. He tied fellow Cincinnatian
James Weber in
regulation, then Lacey defeated Weber in an 18-hole playoff, 27 to
29.
In the amateur division, it was
Scott Copeland
of Springfield, Ohio, winning the Ohio Open title in his first
outing of the year. Copeland fired a 22-under par 86 to win by three
