First South Lake Charles Optimist Club
Lake Area Putting Association Junior Putting Clinic

Lake Charles, LA - 4-8 June 2007 - The first South Lake Charles Optimist Club/Lake Area Putting Association Junior Putting Clinic was held Monday, June 4th through Friday, June 8th, 2007, at the local Putt Putt Fun and Games in Lake Charles. Fifty-two (52) children from around the Lake Charles area between the ages of 8 and 18 participated in the event during the week.

The event was sponsored with a very generous grant from the South Lake Charles Optimist Club. Optimist Club members participated in the event by providing adult leadership, assisted with keeping scores for younger children, and cooked lunch for the children on Friday. Optimist Club members that assisted in the event were Mrs. Jeanette Manuel, Mr. Ronnie Odom, Mrs. Janice Parkerson, Mr. Hardy Parkerson, Mrs. Jo Racca, Mr. Alvin Simpson, Mr. Danny Tatum, Mr. Paul Tatum, Mrs. Violet Tatum, and Mr. Jack Young. It would have been impossible to hold this event without the very generous funding and participation of the South Lake Charles Optimist Club.

The Lake Area Putting Association consists of local Putt Putt professionals and amateurs that want to give back to the game that they have enjoyed for years and help children learn to enjoy the game as much as they do. Local professionals are also members of the national Professional Putters Association (PPA), while local amateurs are members of the national Amateur Putters Association (APA). Local professionals that assisted with the tournament were Mr. Alvin Simpson (PPA Hall of Fame member), Mr. Greg Simpson, local Putt Putt Fun and Games owner, Mr. Danny Tatum (a PGA member also), Mr. Charles Cox, Mr. Tom Robertson and Mr. Byron Kirby. Local amateurs that assisted with the event were Mr. Nathan Anderson and Mr. Mickey DeLucca.

Children were given instruction in the basics of putting as well as how to improve their scores during the week. Local professionals and amateurs evaluated the children during the week as to their abilities to play the game and the children were then grouped in five different flights based on their abilities for Fridays 36 hole competition.
