Walk along the path of Putt-Putt Golf Courses of America and the Professional Putters Association, and surely, you will come upon Joe Aboid, son of one of the game's founding fathers, Phil Aboid, who distinguished himself as one of the franchise system's most revered owners.
"I remember telling my dad that it wasn't easy being Phil Aboid's son," Joe Aboid says. "It had been a hard day at the Putt-Putt, it was 2 o'clock in the morning and I was 16 years old. I told my dad that it was never what Joe Aboid did, but what Phil Aboid's son did. He told me, like only my dad could, that if I felt that way that I should do something else in life, because I would always be Phil Aboid's son."
From player to course manager to operations executive for Putt-Putt Golf Courses of America to PPA National Tournament Director to PPA Commissioner to owner of the Putt-Putt Golf & Games in Lynchburg, Va., Joe Aboid emerged to cast a giant shadow of his own in the franchise system that was founded in 1954. He did it with an integrity, an honesty, a work ethic and a passion that has been unequaled in the history of Putt-Putt Golf Courses of America - all lessons learned from Phil Aboid, the father Joe Aboid adored.
"Everything that I learned and attempted to do started with my mom and my dad," Joe Aboid says. "It started in our home with their commitment to one another, and to our family. It followed me through life, and that's why I have always cherished the business of Putt-Putt Golf. It's the greatest game, because it is where you see fathers and mothers, grandfathers and grandmothers and sisters and brothers enjoying themselves as a family. There is no greater reward in this business."
In his youth, Joe Aboid became the first manager of the PPA Course in Columbus, Ohio. In his living room, he helped create the PPA Hall of Fame. In his soul, he served the PPA as national tournament director and its commissioner in a season on the threshold of end. In Ypsilanti, Mich., he was there to witness an old friend realize a lifelong dream. In his heart, Teri Aboid has been the love of his life, Lynn Aboid his pride and his joy, and Putt-Putt Golf & Games and the Professional Putters Association his passion.
"I am grateful to Don Clayton and so many who allowed me to stand on their shoulders," Joe Aboid said on August 9, 2001 as he became the 29th member of the PPA Hall of Fame in ceremonies in Lynchburg, Va. "Without them, I never could have climbed the mountains. And most of all, I am so proud to say that I am Phil Aboid's son."
