2012 PPA Rule Book

2012 PPA Rule Book
2012 PPA Rule Book in Adobe Acrobat Format

The 2012 PPA Rule Book (available for download) has several rules that have been changed from 2011.  Significant rule changes have been put in place as directed by the advisory committee regarding amateur participation including expense reimbursement payouts.  Other rules that have changed regard changing membership status, starting times, and a rule prohibiting players from texting, accessing the internet or using their cell phone during play.  For any questions please contact Joe Aboid or a member of the Player advisory board (names are listed in this years book) for explanation.

Official PPA Golf Ball for 2012

The PPA golf ball rule has changed slightly for the 2012 season. For the 2012 PPA tournament season, any golf ball that appears on the USGA conforming golf ball list published on January 4th, 2012 or on a subsequent listing during 2012 (list is updated on the first Wednesday of each month) will be legal for PPA practice and tournament play.  As with any golf ball you wish to use, it is your responsibility to compare the pole markings to those on the USGA lists to make sure your ball is legal.  The Top Flight Strata Tour soft with the 2004 PPA Logo is no longer legal for tournament play in 2012, thus none of the golf balls with the PPA logo from 2004 or earlier are allowed to be used for sanctioned PPA competition.

In addition, all golf balls must be white in color and no golf balls with logos except those used by the golf ball manufacture, Putt-Putt, PPA or other corporate or personal sponsorships are permitted.

PPA National Tournaments for 2012

Frank Warren
Frank Warren
2011 PPA Western Open Champion

The 2012 PPA National Tour schedule will begin with the contesting of the PPA Western Open, hosted by the PPA Southwest Putting Tour, on course # 1 at the beautiful Lake Charles, LA Putt-Putt Fun Center, formerly owned by late legendary PPA Hall of Fame member Al Simpson and now owned and operated by his descendants, including current APA member Greg Simpson. In 2012 the PPA National Tour will institute an abbreviated 108-hole format for the Western, Southern, Northern, and Eastern Opens, which likely will result in some very tightly-contested tournaments with closely-bunched scoring.

After an eight-year hiatus from 2000-2007, the PPA Western Open will be held for the fifth consecutive season. Doyle Smith captured the inaugural PPA Western Open in Denver, CO in 1967. In 2011, two-time PPA Senior National Champion Frank Warren fired a nearly-unfathomable final-round 22 in chilly and windswept Memphis, TN to win the PPA Western Open by two strokes over PPA Hall of Fame member Andy Coradini.

Past PPA Western Open Champions expected give challenge to Warren in the 2012 field include three-time champion Greg Ward, who won the PPA Western Open on course # 1 in Lake Charles in 2008; 2009 winner Randy Reeves; and 1998 victor Cliff Matthews, who captured his PPA Western Open title at Lake Charles, LA Putt-Putt Fun Center's previous location. In addition to Matthews, a formidable bevy of PPA Southwest Tour stalwarts who promise to contend includes 2010 PPA Eastern Open Champion Joel Baker; PPA Hall of Fame member Mike Baldoza, who finished as runner-up to Ward in the 2008 PPA Western Open in Lake Charles; PPA Hall of Fame member Brice Bergesen; Lake Charles local standout Byron Kirby; former television contestant Joe Lea; 2011 LA State Champion Wade Sahmel; six-time PPA Western/Texas Tour Champion Jeffrey Smith; and talent-laden Texan Rainey Statum.

Randy Reeves
2011 PPA Southern Open Champion

The PPA Southern Putting Tour will host the 108-hole 2012 PPA Southern Open on course # 2 at the beautiful and storied High Point, NC Putt-Putt Fun Center. Course manager Chris Graney and course owner Todd Lecka for many years have welcomed the PPA State and National Tours to their facility, the courses of which are widely regarded as outstanding tests of putting skill. Speed control will be at a premium on the fast carpets of the course # 2 layout.

Held in 1961 in Atlanta, GA, the first PPA Southern Open was won by Pete Reed. Last season on the Red Course in Martinez, GA, 1997 PPA National Champion Randy Reeves captured his first-career PPA Southern Open crown by besting PPA Hall of Fame member Jay Klapper and former PPA television contestant Jeff McDonald in an 18-hole playoff after the trio tied atop the leaderboard at the end of regulation play with a then-PPA record 144-hole total of 186. Past PPA Southern Open Champions slated to join Reeves in the 2012 field include three-time champion Greg Ward, 2010 winner Tony Varnadore, 2009 victor Klapper, globetrotting 1998 winner Kevin Lacey, and 2006 PPA National Champion Brad Lebo, who won the 2007 PPA Southern Open on course # 1 in High Point and whose four career tour victories on High Point's course # 2 include the 2005 NC State Championship.

Other PPA Southern Putting Tour standouts also expected to contend in the 2012 PPA Southern Open include 2010 PPA National Champion and regular High Point local player Greg Newport, who has won a 2004 NC Tour event as well as countless local tournaments on High Point's course # 2; High Point local star Gary Hester; 2007 PPA National Champion Rick Baird, who captured last season's 54-hole Randy Carter Classic on High Point's course # 2; three-time Southern Putting Tour Player of the Year Jeff Carr; PPA Hall of Fame member Bill Kirby, who in 2011 won a 54-hole Southen Putting Tour event on course # 2 in High Point; 2003 PPA National Champion Robert Johnson, who triumphed in the 2010 NC State Championship on course # 2 in High Point; and nearby Greensboro, NC resident Michael Hitt, who has notched two career tour wins, including the 2005 North Carolina Match Play Championship, on High Point's course # 2.

2012 PPA Northern Open
July 7-8, 2012
Columbus, IN

Jay Klapper
Andy Coradini
2011 PPA Northern Open Champion

The PPA National Tour will return to the bucolic and picturesque setting of course # 2 at the Columbus, IN Putt-Putt Fun Center, the site of the 2007, 2009, and 2011 PPA Northern Opens and the 2007 PPA Tournament Players Championship, to contest the 2012 PPA Northern Open.  The 108-hole event, first won by Daryl Hayden in Youngstown, OH in 1969, will be hosted jointly by the PPA Indiana and Great Lakes Tours.  Tour players will look forward to the unparalleled hospitality of long-time course owners Carl and Karen Miller.  The tournament also will provide invaluable practice for players for the 2012 PPA National Championship week, the events of which will be held on courses # 1 and # 2 in Columbus, IN from September 11-15.

If tournament results of recent seasons are any indication, record scoring will be a possibility on Columbus, IN's pristine course # 2 layout. At that venue last season, recently-inducted PPA Hall of Fame member Andy Coradini captured his third-career PPA Northern Open title by firing a heroic final-round 22 to post a then-record-tying 144-hole total of 186 to notch a two-stroke victory over 2006 PPA National Champion Brad Lebo and PPA Hall of Fame member Jay Klapper, who narrowly missed winning his third-consecutive PPA Northern Open title.  In 2009 on course # 2 in Columbus, Klapper established a then-new PPA eight-round scoring record of 191 en route to an eight-stroke triumph over local standout Nate Nichols.  Rick Culverhouse emerged victorious in the 2007 PPA Northern Open on Columbus' course # 2 by carding a final-round 21 en route to a two-shot win with a four-round total of 99.

Former PPA Northern Open Champions anticipated to participate in 2012 who hope to dethrone Coradini include two-time winner Klapper, Culverhouse, and 2008 champion Jerry Pinotti.  The litany of PPA Indiana Tour players expected to challenge Coradini includes Nichols, 2008 PPA National Champion Kevin Lacey, and two-time PPA National Match Play Champion Charlie Greenwalt, all of whom have won multiple PPA Indiana and Northern Tour major titles on Columbus' course # 2 layout

2012 PPA Eastern Open
August 11-12, 2012
Richmond, Virginia

Jay Klapper
Greg Newport
2011 PPA Eastern Open Champion

Course manager, PPA Hall of Fame member, and host PPA professional Gary Hinshaw will welcome the PPA National Tour to the sprawling and immaculately-maintained Richmond, VA Putt-Putt Fun Center for the contesting of the 108-hole 2012 PPA Eastern Open, hosted by the Virginia PPA Tour. Under ideal conditions, Richmond's course # 2 layout should yield considerable low scoring and potentially produce an old-fashioned shootout.

In 1961, PPA Hall of Fame member Neil Conner captured the initial Eastern Open in Long Island, NY. 2010 PPA National Champion Greg Newport dominated the field in last season's version of the event held on historic course # 3 in Richmond, VA to earn an eight-stroke triumph over 2011 LA State Champion Wade Sahmel and two-time PPA National Doubles Champion Rick Rybaczek, in the process establishing a new PPA 144-hole scoring record of 185. Newport also captured the 2009 PPA Eastern Open title on a wind-swept course # 3 in Richmond, VA by defeating then-defending champion Jay Klapper in an 18-hole playoff. Former PPA Eastern Open Champions hoping to thwart Newport's title defense should include 2010 winner Joel Baker, Klapper, 1999 victor Charlie Greenwalt, and 1998 titleholder Greg Ward.

Past winners of Virginia PPA Tour events on Richmond's course # 2 expected to compete include Richmond, VA local player Manfred Stewart, who triumphed in the 2000 Virginia Open on course # 2 and established the current course record of 19 during a 2009 weekly local event; Richmond, VA local player Ed Grajewski; two-time Midwest States Tour Champion Gary Watson, who won on course # 2 in 2008 with a 54-hole score of 68; 2004 PPA National Tour Player of the Year John Bambling; and 2006 PPA National Champion Brad Lebo, whose two VA Tour victories on course # 2 include winning the 2008 Virginia Putting Classic with a 72-hole total of 94.

The 2012 PPA Tournament Players Championship, a 72-hole event, will be contested on courses # 1 and # 2 at the Columbus, IN Putt-Putt Fun Center. In its relatively brief history, the tournament has produced an illustrious litany of winners. PPA Hall of Fame member Jay Klapper captured the inaugural title in 1993 in Columbus, OH. The event then went on hiatus until 2007, when Vince Batten defeated James Taylor in a playoff for victory on course # 1 in Columbus, IN. In 2008 in Richmond, VA, Kevin Lacey fired an impressive 72-hole total of 93 in steady rainfall for a one-stroke triumph over PPA Hall of Fame member Daryl Freeman. Another PPA Hall of Fame member, Greg Ward, found the winner's circle in 2009 in Orlando, FL by opening up a five-shot lead after three rounds with a 54-hole total of 69 and ultimately cruising to a wire-to-wire victory with a four-round score of 98. In 2010 in Lynchburg, VA, Lacey became the first two-time winner of the event by dominating the field with a 72-hole total of 95 for a four-stroke triumph over two-time PPA Senior National Champion Frank Warren.  Last season in Memphis, TN, two-time PPA National Champion Cliff Matthews earned his first PPA Tournament Players Championship title by defeating reigning PPA Senior National Champion Ken Hastings in a playoff after the pair tied at 97 at the end of 72 holes of regulation play.

In a change of format from past seasons, the 2012 Tournament Players Championship will be open to all professionals and amateurs.  A total of twenty professionals will qualify for play in the 2012 PPA Tournament Players Championship without having to pay the required entry fee. Andy Coradini

2011 PPA National Champion

The 2012 PPA National Tour schedule will be highlighted by the 53rd annual contesting of the PPA National Championship, professional putting's premier event. For the first time in PPA history, the two-day, 144-hole tournament will be conducted on courses # 1 and # 2 in the bucolic and immaculately-maintained setting of the Columbus, IN Putt-Putt Fun Center. In past seasons, long-time facility owners Carl and Karen Miller graciously have hosted the 2007, 2009, and 2011 PPA Northern Opens; the 2007 PPA Tournament Players Championship; and many events on the PPA Indiana and Northern Tours. Additionally, the Millers will welcome the PPA National Tour to Columbus for the PPA Northern Open on July 7-8, 2012. If history serves as an indicator, record low scoring looms as a possibility on the pristine and pure-playing Columbus courses.

PPA Hall of Fame member Neil Conner captured the first PPA National Championship title in 1960 in Atlanta, GA. Last season in Memphis, TN, Andy Coradini, a 48-year-old business owner and manager from Soddy-Daisy, TN, enjoyed a memorable and historic PPA National Championship week. In a ceremony held several nights before the PPA National Championship began, the PPA inducted Coradini into its Hall of Fame. Less than four days later, Coradini put an exclamation point on his PPA Hall of Fame credentials by securing the second PPA National Championship title of his career. Trailing first-day leader Cliff Matthews by four strokes at the event's halfway point, Coradini posted a spectacular 54-hole total of 69 in the first three rounds of the second day of play on the challenging and fickle Memphis courses to open up a five-stroke lead on the field with one round remaining. Coradini carefully negotiated the final round to hold on for a one-stroke victory over hard-charging past PPA National Champions Jay Klapper and Kevin Lacey with a 144-hole total of 199.

Past PPA National Champions expected to join Coradini in the 2012 field include Greg Newport, Tony Varnadore, Kevin Lacey, Rick Baird, Brad Lebo, Jay Klapper, two-time champion Cliff Matthews, Robert Johnson, Greg Ward, two-time titleholder Lewis Burton, Randy Reeves, Bill Kirby, and Daryl Freeman.
