Greg Ward Wins the Howard Loy Memorial  by One-Stroke in Burlington, NC

Greg Ward

21 March 2010 - Burlington, N.C. The second of two beautiful spring days greeted the SPT in Burlington on March 21st for the Howard Loy Memorial. Bill Kirby, Daryl Freeman and Bill Baus all spoke of Mr. Loy and his dedication to the PPA, Putt-Putt and to keeping a beautiful course for all to play. Those traits have passed down from Mr. Loy to the next owner Bobby Gilmore and to the current staff Brian Patterson has. The Burlington Putt-Putt has been a staple of the North Carolina and Southern Putting tours since their inceptions.

Scores for Sundays first round followed the trend from Saturdays low scores. John Ventura firing an excellent 13 under par 23 took the early lead by one stroke over 1997 PPA National Champion Randy Reeves and 2007 Senior National Champion Frank Warren. Two strokes back were Hall of Fame legend Daryl Freeman, 2007 PPA National Champion Rick Baird and 2006 Georgia State Champion Michael Hitt.

Warren followed up his 24 with a 25 to establish the 36 hole lead at 49, one stroke ahead of 2001 PPA National Champion Greg Ward who fired a 24. Tied for 3rd at 51 were Hitt and 2007 Elton Davis winner Tony Jackson.

The final round saw what has happened many times since Ward started playing with the tournament on the line, he comes thru. Playing in the first group Ward fired a 12 under par 24 to take the early lead at 74. Reeves playing in the second group also shot 24 to finish at 76. Putt-Putt Frank played well but his 10 under par 26 was not enough to catch Ward but was enough to finish 2nd and gain the SPT qualifying spot. Michael Hitt shot a final round 25 to finish tied for third and 2006 National Champion Brad Lebo fired a third consecutive 26 to finish at 78 in 5th place. Last cash was a split at 81.

Mark Lawson

In the APA division Mark Lawson completely dominated the day. Lawson started with a 12 under par 24 to take a one stroke lead over Randal Smith and two strokes over Adam Smith.

A second 24 for Lawson gave him the 36 hole lead at 48 and a 4 stroke lead over 2003 APA National Champion Bonnie White, who also shot 24. Third place was a tie at 54 between the two runner-ups from the day before - Randal Smith and Lance Perdue.

With a final round of 29 Lawson finished with an excellent score of 77 and a six stroke victory over the trio of Perdue, Rodney Ashley and the previous days winner Keith Waters. White and a hard charging Steve Helton finished at 84 in a tie for 5th place.

The Southern Putting Tour thanks Brian and his staff for their continued support of the tour and awesome hospitality we receive each visit. Next up for the SPT is the annual visit to White Lake and the playing of the 26th annual Carolinas Open.
