07 June 2009 - Charlottesville, VA - The Virginia PPA Tour held its second major championship of the 2009 season, the 72-hole Dogwood Festival Open, on course # 2 on the picturesque and neatly-manicured grounds of the Charlottesville, VA Putt-Putt Fun Center. The tournament's true winner was the course, as excessive heat and baking sunshine caused the course's carpet fibers to stand at full attention throughout the event. The challenging conditions made the already-mercurial course seem angrier than an old man attempting to return soup at a New York delicatessen and wreaked havoc on the scoring of the defenseless field. Patience and some good fortune would prove to be the most important weapons in a player's armamentarium in a tournament which developed into a war of attrition.
 Dennis Biesma
|
Fittingly, tour sophomore
Dennis Biesma, as one of only two players in the professional field to keep all four rounds under a score of 33, earned his first career state tour major title. Biesma fired steady and solid rounds of 27, 29, 30, and 29 for an impressive 72-hole total of 115 and a two-stroke victory, his second of the 2009 PPA season. The course unfortunately took revenge on 1991 VA State Champion
Ed Grajewski's brilliant start to the event. Grajewski seized a commanding four-stroke lead at 82 after 54 holes but struggled mightily in the final round, carding 35 and settling for runner-up honors at 117. Two-time PPA ProPutters.com Classic Champion
Greg Newport used a tournament-low 25 in the event's penultimate round to pole-vault into a third-place finish at 118. Recording very consistent rounds of 29, 30, 29, and 31, two-time PPA Senior National Champion
Bill Baus completed the event in fourth position at 119. Defending champion
Brad Lebo posted three competitive rounds of 29, but, by virtue of a disastrous second-round 33, fell out of serious contention and finished in fifth place at 120. The cash line for the nine money spots awarded in the professional division fell at a total of 126.
 Bill Petrie

In the amateur division, Lynchburg, VA's
Bill Petrie captured his long-overdue first career amateur division triumph in grand fashion. Petrie carded spectacular rounds of 29, 29, 28, and 29 for a 72-hole score of 115 and in the process became the only contestant in either division to keep all four tournament rounds under 30. After recording a pedestrian opening-round 32, 1999 VA APA State Champion
Malcolm Shumaker stormed back into contention with rounds of 27, 28, and 29. His spirited charge fell a stroke short of success, however, as he finished in second place at 116. Reigning VA APA State Champion
Conway Coffey, amateur division winner in the previous day's event, completed the day in third position at 120. A two-way, fourth-place tie at 121 included two-time APA National Champion
Clayton Craft, Esq. and second-round leader
Terry Sanner. The last of the seven amateur division expense reimbursement spots allocated in the tournament came at a score of 127.
