Greg Newport Defeats Gary Hinshaw in Playoff for Victory in Roanoke, VA

Greg Newport

27 September 2008 - Roanoke, VA - In the second of two 54-hole Virginia PPA Tour events played on the eve of the Virginia State Championship on course # 2 at the Roanoke, VA Putt-Putt Fun Center, a steady, driving afternoon rainfall challenged the field of 17 professionals.  The difficult conditions did not hinder two-time PPA ProPutters.com Classic Champion Greg Newport and PPA Hall of Fame member Gary Hinshaw, who matched rounds of 25, 25, and 26 to finish regulation play deadlocked at a 54-hole score of 76.  In the ensuing 18-hole playoff, Newport took a three-stroke lead after the outward nine and held on to defeat Hinshaw, 26-28, and earn his first VA Tour victory of the season.  2006 PPA National Champion Brad Lebo deuced his final hole of the tournament to miss the playoff by a stroke and settled for a third-place finish at 77.  At 78, defending champion Vince Batten and 1999 VA State Champion Randal Smith tied for fourth position.  The final of the nine cash spots awarded in the event fell at 82.

Mike Matthews

In the amateur division, reigning APA National Doubles Champion Mike Matthews continued his mastery of the Roanoke layout, cruising to an easy four-stroke victory.  Matthews posted impressive rounds of 26, 25, and 23 for a 54-hole total of 74.  Five-time VA State APA Champion Chuck Dibbs notched runner-up honors at 78.  At 79, newly-crowned APA National Champion James Walker and 1999 VA State APA Champion Malcolm Shumaker shared third position.  The trio of Wade Driskill, Gerald Vick, and Bill Petrie tied for fifth place at 85 and split the final amateur division expense reimbursement spot available in the tournament.

The Virginia PPA Tour returns to action for its final tournament of the 2008 schedule, the 108-hole Virginia State Championship.  The event will be contested on course # 2 at the Roanoke, VA Putt-Putt Fun Center beginning at 9:00 a.m. on Sunday, September 28, 2008.
