Byron Kirby
of Sulphur, Louisiana, won the Professional Division of the Texas
State Qualifying tournament today in Waco, Texas, by one stroke at
91 over second-place finisher David McCollister of Baton Rouge,
Louisiana, and a total field of fifteen professionals. Kirby was
tied for first with
Wade Sahmel
of Huffman, Texas, after the first round with a 29. Byron snot
another 29 his second round to open a three stroke lead at 58 over
both Sahmel and
Brice Bergesen
of Houston, Texas, who were tied for second with a 61. Kirby shot a
33 his third round to finish with a total score of 91, while
McCollister shot a six under par, 30, to finish strong and claim
second place with a 92. Texas State Championship spots were won by
Kirby, McCollister, and Sahmel in Medal play and Greg Simpson and
Mike Baldoza
in Match play.
Kenny Beck of
Katy, Texas, won the Amateur Division of the Texas State Qualifying
tournament today in Waco, Texas, by one stroke at 94 over second-place
finisher Adam
Sahmel of Huffman, Texas, and a total field of fifteen amateurs.
Sahmel was in first place at 30 after the first round and was tied for
first with Ken
Stanfill of Waco, Texas, after the second round at 62. Beck was two
strokes back at 64 after the second round at 64 and shot a 30 his final
round to win by two strokes over Sahmel. Texas State Championship spots
were won by Beck and Sahmel in Medal play and
Dave Blalock
and Jason
Sheffield in Match play.
