Jeffrey Smith Earns Third Victory of 2008 Season
17 August 2008 - Tyler, TX - Jeffrey Smith of Dallas, Texas won the Professional Division of the Texas State Qualifying tournament today in Tyler, Texas, by one stroke at 28 under par, 80, over runner-up Joel Baker of Arlington, Texas, and a total field of fifteen professionals. Tom Adair of Tyler, Texas, posted an opening round of ten under par 26, to take a one stroke lead over Gary Reed of Lubbock, Texas. Smith posted a ten under par, 26, his second round to attain a one stroke lead over Baker. Smith then followed up his second round 26 with a 26 his third round to attain his third victory of the season. Texas State Championship spots were won by Wade Sahmel of Huffman, Texas, Brice Bergesen of Houston, Texas, Greg Simpson of Lake Charles, Louisiana, Reed and Adair in Medal play. Mickey DeLucca of Baton Rouge, Louisiana, won the Amateur Division of the Texas State Qualifying tournament today in Tyler, Texas, by four strokes over Trevor Lewin of Dallas, Texas, and a field of 12 amateurs after three rounds of Medal play. Alan Sahmel shot an opening round of eight under par, 28, to hold a one stroke lead over a trio of players that shot a 29. After 36 holes of play, Lewin and Alan Sahmel were tied at fourteen under par, 58, and held a two stroke lead over Dave Blalock of Tyler, Texas, and DeLucca. DeLucca shot a fourteen under par, 22, his final round to attain his third victory of the season by four strokes over Lewin.
