Gary Reed Picks Up Second Win of Season with Victory in Tyler

16 August 2008 - Tyler, TX - Gary Reed of Lubbock, Texas, won the Professional Division of the Texas State Qualifying tournament today in Tyler, Texas, by one stroke at 25 under par, 83, over Jeffrey Smith of Dallas, Texas, and a total field of fourteen professionals, for his second victory of the season.  James Taylor of Lubbock, Texas, posted an opening round of eleven under par 25, to take a one stroke lead over Joel Baker of Arlington, Texas, and Tom Robertson of Lake Charles, Louisiana.  Reed shot a second round nine under par 27, to take a one stroke lead at 55, 17 under par, over several players that posted scores between 56 and 59 for two rounds.  Reed shot an eight under par 28, his final round to capture the victory.  Texas State Championship spots were won by Reed, Wade Sahmel of Huffman, Texas, and Tom Adair of Tyler, Texas in Medal play and David Lynch and Charles Cox in Match play.

Adam Sahmel of Huffman, Texas, won the Amateur Division of the Texas State Qualifying tournament in Tyler, Texas, by one stroke over Gary Plain of Tyler, Texas, and Trevor Lewin of Dallas, Texas in an 18-hole playoff. All three tied at 21 under par, 87, after three rounds of Medal play.  Sahmel shot six under par 30,  besting Plain by one and Lewin by 2 for his second victory.  John Berger of Tyler, Texas, shot nine under par, 27, to lead by one stroke over Sahmel and Pat Simpson of Denton, Texas, after the first round.  Berger shot six under par, 30, to lead by two strokes at 57 after two rounds of play over Lewin and Sahmel.  Plain shot a nine under par 27 his final round while Sahmel and Lewin shot eight under par, 28, to tie for first place after three rounds of Medal play.  Texas State Championship spots were won by Plain, Terry Lender, Jack Ramsey, Chris Franks, and Mike Huckaby.
