Defending
Texas State Champion, Mike Baldoza, Posts Three Consistent
Rounds for Victory in Webster
28 April 2007 - Webster, TX
- The Texas Putting Tour held its first event of the year at
this years National Championship course in Webster, Texas.
With new carpet being laid only a few weeks before the event
the course would play extremely slow. While the slowness of
the carpets made the aces tougher it took out some the
trouble from the number 3 course.
The first round looked to be a very tight affair with 8 of the 15
players coming in between 28 and 30 but
Brice Bergesen, playing in
the last group, blew that up when he posted a very nice 10 under 26
to take a two stroke lead over
Mike Baldoza and
Lee Messinger.
Brice would shoot a 6 under 30 in the second round and a host of
players would make up ground on leader.
Steve Tanton would be best
with a second round 26 pushing him into the lead. Mike would shoot
an 8 under 28 to tie Brice and be one stroke behind Steve.
Byron
Kirby would shot a nice 27 to tie Brice and Mike for second. Both
Don Parker and
Wade Sahmel had nice second rounds and both players
entered the third round three strokes behind the lead.
In the last round it would be Wade Sahmel making a move on the
front nine shooting a 5 under 13 and moving to within one stroke of
the lead. Both Mike and Byron were solid on the front nine with 4
under scores but Brice and Steve would fall a little off the pace
both only managing a 2 under 16. The last nine holes would see Mike
take over the event with a 5 under 13 which netted him a final round
total of 25 under 83 and the win. Byron Kirby would hold off Wade
for second place by one stroke. Both Byron and Mike also earned
state spots. The two additional state spots went to Wade Sahmel and
Don Parker in match play competition.
