Cliff Matthews Blows Away Field in his First Texas State Tour Event of 2007
5 May 2007 - Arlington (Parks), TX - After spending the first part of the season in the south the Texas Putting Tour ventured north to the Dallas-Ft. Worth area for its 4th and 5th events of the year. Saturday the tour would play the normally tough Arlington Parks course. As the players showed up they found that new carpet and mats had been put down which made the course much easier.
Jeffrey Smith would jump out to the lead in the first round with a nice 11 under 25 to give him a two stroke lead over Cliff Matthews, playing in his first event of the year. Sitting tied for third four strokes behind Jeffrey were Gary Reed, James Taylor and Lee Messinger. Cliff would take over the lead in the second round with 10 under 26 giving him a four stroke lead over Jeffrey and Gary.
Cliff would quickly put the tournament away at the start of the last round with a 7 under on the front nine, a finishing last nine of 5 under would Cliff the low round of the day 12 under 24, a total of 31 under 77, a state spot, and a nine stroke victory. The remaining places would be tight with Gary Reed taking second and Jeffrey Smith and Joel Baker finishing tied for third one stroke behind Gary. Additional state spots went to Gary Reed and Steve Tanton in match play.
