Michael Hitt
2006 Georgia State Champion |
2-3 September 2006 -
Martinez, GA - Trailing by five shots heading into
the second day of the Georgia State Championship,
Michael Hitt
posted the tournament's lowest round early on Sunday. Hitt fired an
impressive score of 20, which included a perfect nine, to move into
contention.
Another brilliant round in the seventh round put the eventual winner
out in front by one stroke. Hitt fired a 22 to grab a one-shot lead on
the 2002
Georgia State Champion
Randy Reeves and it
would be enough as Hitt closed the event with a two-shot win.
Hitt shot a second-day total of 95 and would win the Georgia State
Championship by two strokes over
Frank Warren.
Hitt finished the weekend with a score of 194, the second lowest score
shot on the Southern Tour this season.
Warren finished at 196 to end up alone in second. Reeves fired a
total of 198 and tied
Rick
Culverhouse for third. Defending Georgia State Champion
Greg Ward came in
fifth at 199.
After losing her opportunity to cash in on her first Southern Tour
win on Saturday,
Vanette Block won
her long-standing battle with
Jeff Carr in the
closest State Championship recorded in the APA Division this year on the
Southern Tour. Block began the second day being down by one shot to the
two-time defending champion.
Carr took a two-shot lead through the fifth round and then would lose
the lead to her after he shot 30. Block took the lead and gave it back
to Carr in the seventh round. Nursing a one-shot lead, Carr would give
it away in the final round. Block fired a 27 in the final round and
would pass Carr for the win. Although she shot 107 on Sunday, Block
dethroned the two-time defending State Champion Carr by one shot. It
would also put a halt to Carr's win streak of five tournaments.
Block shot 206 for her first win on the Southern Tour, backing up her
claim as Ladies' National Champion that was also held in Martinez. Carr
shot 207 for second, while
Dennis Biesma
held on to the third spot at 210.
The Southern Putting Tour returns to action this weekend as the tour
heads north to Virginia. The tour will be participating in Martinsville
beginning on Saturday at 12:00 p.m. and on Sunday at 10:00 a.m. Both
events are on Course 2.
