Charlie Greenwalt Wins 2006 Legends Classic
2006 Indiana Legends Classic Champion
29-30 July 2006 - Columbus, IN - Unlike the Northern Putting Tour's first weekend of play in Columbus, IN in May that came with weather in the 70's, the late July Indiana summer weekend had early morning fog, high humidity and temperatures pushing into the 90's by the end of play each day. However, the conditions did not appear to effect Charlie Greenwalt who opened the two-day, eight round tournament with rounds of 24, 25, 21 and 25 to hold a seven stroke lead entering the final four rounds on Sunday.
Trailing by seven strokes at the beginning of play on Sunday, Peter Neumann opened with two strong rounds of 23 and 25 to pull even with Greenwalt after six rounds of play at 150, 66 under par, as it appeared to be a two player race for the 2006 Indiana Legends tournament title. Greenwalt opened up a one stroke lead with a seventh round 26 and a final round 26 was enough for the victory as Neumann could do no better than a final round 26 missing three out of the final four holes including the easy 15th hole. Tom Morrison who played with Greenwalt and Neumann in the final round came from five strokes off the lead entering the final round to post a final round 23 and finish in third. Nate Nichols put together the best four rounds on Sunday, 24, 23, 25 and 27, to move into fourth at 209 with Robb Titchell in fifth at 210. Paul Johns and Mark Hasty tied for sixth at 217.
In the amateur division, Zach Smith put together four stellar rounds on Sunday to post a seven stroke victory. Smith fired rounds of 26, 26, 25 and 25 to post a second day score of 102 and a two-day score of 210, 78 under par. Anthony Russell finished alone in second at 217 with a second day score of 106. John Watkins' second day score of 109 and two-day score of 220 was enough for solo third with Josh Garrison in fourth at 221 and Brandon Davis in fifth at 224.
Scores provided by Robb Titchell.
