Jay Klapper Defeats Daryl Freeman in Playoff for Victory in Spartanburg, SC

9 July 2005 - Spartanburg, SC - Never in South Carolina history had a playoff ensued between two players with matching identical rounds in regulation. Daryl Freeman and Jay Klapper each entered Saturdays playoff with rounds of 27, 26, and 26 for a total of 79 on Spartanburgs Course 2.

Jay Klapper

The tournament began one hour earlier than any normal Saturday event on the tour. The Match Play Championship would proceed following the event. That event would field the top 24 pros and 16 amateurs. As luck would have it, there were only 23 pros and there were 16 amateurs, so all would qualify.

Greg Ward led the action on a summery, yet less humid day. Ward posted an opening round of 23 for a one-shot lead on Randy Reeves. Freeman and Klapper were each tied for fifth and four off the pace at 27.

Scores tightened up in the second round as there was a five-way share of the lead at 53. Another five players were within two shots of the lead and it appeared anyone could win, much less get into a massive playoff. Klapper and Freeman shot 26 apiece to join Ward at 53. Also at that score were Reeves and Andy Coradini. PPA Hall of Fame member Vance Randall put together rounds of 27 each to go into sixth at 54 and joining him was Rick Baird.

The separation in the final round belonged to Klapper and Freeman. For the third consecutive round, they posted exact scores. However, it would be good enough to break 80 and force a playoff.

In the playoff, the duplication between the two would finally cease. Klapper fired another consistent round of 26, but Freeman started off slow and lost to Klapper by five strokes. Klapper would win his second South Carolina tournament of the season, collecting a win at Columbia in March to his credit. It would be his 23rd career victory on the tour and his 11th overall PPA win on Course 2 in Spartanburg. The 23rd career victory for Klapper is ranked second all-time on the tour. Greg Ward leads the way with 51 wins in his lifetime in South Carolina.

Defending National Champion and Spartanburg's APA guru Ricky Schults continues to dominate as he heads to the Nationals in a couple of weeks to defend his title. Schults picked up his third win of the season and did so by using a 23 in the final round to secure the win. Schults trailed second round leader Terry Hendrix by three shots heading into the final round and blasted through with nines totaling 11 and 12 to win by two strokes over Jeff Carr.

Schults posted the days lowest score at 78, enough to win for the third time this season. Carr was second at 80, while Hendrix shared third place with Barry Moore at 82.

Darrell Britt fired a 25 in the final round, one of a few who shot that for the lowest score of the round, to tie Coradini for third at 80. Reeves finished tied for fifth with Rick Culverhouse and Bob Jackson at 81. There were 11 money spots in this event. The scores in the top half of the field was separated by only four shots. Three players made a three-for-two split at 83.

These players will now compete for the Match Play Championship. Tony Jackson is the defending champion, while Richard Griffin will compete as the defending amateur. The tour will then be back to its regular style of play on Sunday, July 10 at 10:00 a.m.
