Lee Messinger
Wins 2005 Oklahoma Open
18-19 June 2005 - Lawton, OK -
The first day of the Oklahoma Open, found the putters playing in a
wind. The wind helped with reducing the heat of the day, but helped
to keep the aces away.
Lee Messinger
started with a one stroke lead over
Steve
Armstrong and
Mike Chisum. After the second round Steve Armstrong caught Lee
Messinger and Mike Chisum was still one stroke back. In the third
round Lee would shoot a 28 that would give him the lead for what
would be the rest of the 2-day event. Lee finished the day in first
with a 151. Second place was in a little tighter race with Steve
Armstrong at 157, Mike Chisum at 158 and
James Taylor
at 159.

In the APA,
Danny Hoel took and early lead by firing a 29 in the first
round, but it was a third round 27 that gave
Jason
VanBuskirk the lead for the day. Jason finished the day with a
156. Mike
Huckaby was in second with a 163.
The second day would find the putters with the same wind to deal
with a course 2 for the final 4 rounds of the Open. It did not take
long to determine that there was going to be a two man race in the
pros. Lee Messinger started the day with a 26, but Steve Armstrong
was trying to stay up with a 28 of his own. Every time it seemed
Steve Armstrong would get close, Lee Messinger would put down a
streak of aces to keep his lead. Lee won the event with a 271 and
Steve Armstrong finished in second with a 277. Steve Armstrong had
only one bogey for the entire rounds. James Taylor received the
world spot.
In the APA, there was a race to be ran.
David Chisum
moved all the way from 5th place challenge for the lead and
John Lozier
worked all the way from third to challenge the lead as well. Jason
some how managed to keep the win by finishing with a 283, a one
stroke lead over David Chisum and John Lozier. David Chisum shot the
low for the day of 118 and John Lozier was right behind him with a
119. They were tied for second at the end of the 9 rounds at 284 and
had to go to a play off for the hardware. John Lozier won the
playoff to get APA runner-up.
