Brad Lebo Posts
His Third Victory of 2005 Season
1 May 2005 -
White Lake, N.C. -
The third and final leg of the weekend in White Lake will go down as a
record setting day. Brad Lebo shattered the old record of 73 by two
strokes in the Pro Division and Jeff Carr destroyed Dennis Biesma's
record he set in the Amateur Division less than 24 hours ago. Lebo also
tied a single round record with a 22 in the second round that solidified
his wire-to-wire win on Sunday.
Lebo led a group of 38 players that came as far north as Cleveland,
Ohio to as far south as Montgomery, Alabama. Through the first round, he
was sharing the lead with three other players at 24, including Saturday
evening's winner Mike Brown, Carolinas' Open winner Randy Reeves, and
Rick Culverhouse. Lebo took charge in the second round and was
completely unstoppable. Lebo fired a second round score of 22, which was
posted for the eighth time in history in White Lake, joining Brown, Rick
Rybaczek, Ricky Schults, and Greg Ward amongst those who accomplished
the feat before. After two rounds, Lebo was in at 46, with Culverhouse,
who was in his group, and Reeves two back of Lebo at 48.
After a slow start on the front nine in the final round, Lebo
recovered to shoot 11 on the back for a round total of 25 and a secured
victory by three shots over Brown and Reeves. Lebo also broke the old
record by two strokes with a final score of 71. The old record was set
by Vince Batten last season and matched just earlier this weekend by
Rusty Taylor in his win on Saturday.
Brown and Reeves were tied for second at 74. Robert Johnson jumped to
fourth after a final round 26 placed him at 75. Culverhouse would slip
down to the fifth position with a score of 77.
It was also a record-setting day for APA veteran Jeff Carr. After
trailing by two shots to Dennis Biesma, Carr took his opening round 26
and completed play with a pair of 23's. It would be enough for a
seven-shot victory and would knock Biesma off the record books for
lowest APA score by five shots.
Carr posted an incredible score of 72 for his second win this season
in North Carolina. Carr also posted his first win this season in South
Carolina with that score. Biesma came in second at 79, while third went
to Frankie Peters at 82.
Carr also grabbed the APA qualifying spot from this tournament. Lebo
earned spots into the North Carolina State, South Carolina State, and
North Carolina Match Play Championships. Reeves took the World Match
Play qualifying spot from this event.
Special thanks goes directly out to John and Jill Womble for their
gracious offering in hosting this weekend in White Lake. This weekend's
activities yielded the largest turnout in history, almost triple the
numbers that were there when the tour began playing regularly in 1996.
With the weekend over with, both tours will not play again for at
least three weeks. North Carolina is next in action on May
21st and 22nd in Martinsville, Virginia on
Course 2 for a pair of tournaments that will also be with the Virginia
tour. The South Carolina tour resumes their season the following weekend
on the Red Course in Martinez, Georgia.
