Jeff Carr Wins the
2005 AmPutters.com Classic
24 July 2005 -Louisville, KY -
Jeff Carr of Orangeburg, SC was the first off the tee on
Course #3 this morning as the "Week of Nationals" got underway with
the 2005 AmPutters.com Classic in Louisville. As the 2004
ProPutters.com Defending Champion and one of the hottest putters in
the APA in 2005, all eyes were on Carr as he lead the field through
72 holes of competition. At the end of the 72nd hole, Carr - and the
entire APA field - knew he had done what no other APA had done
before. Carr was the AmPutters.com Classic Champion for the second
year in a row.
The amateur portion of the ProPutters.com was renamed
AmPutters.com starting in 2005. The announcement was made after the
tournament at the Annual Hall of Fame Banquet.
There was little doubt Carr was going to be the one to beat right
from the first round when he posted the opening round lead and low
score of the APA field for the day at 14 under par. There were two
people within a stroke at the end of that first round, and that
would be as close as anyone would get all day. In the end, Dennis
Biesma of Marion, VA would be the closest to keeping the pace, but
would fall 4 strokes short of Carr who posted a four round total 100
for the win.
Carr blazed through the opening round right from the first hole,
acing 14 of his first 16 holes. Carr's tee shot on Hole 17 went to
the back rail, and his deuce putt missed the cup for a bogey. Carr
regained his composure for an ace on hole 18 and his opening round
22 was good for a one stroke lead over Defending 2004 National
Champion Ricky Schults, Terry Sanner and Frankie Peters. A group of
6 putters finished the first round at 10 under par, with another
group of 6 at 9 under par.
Action moved over to the more difficult Course #1 for the second
round, and Carr didn't let up. Carr posted a second round 10 under
par and went to the clubhouse in the lead at 48. Sanner found
trouble in the second round, dropping back in the field. Schults and
Peters held strong posting matching 9 under par rounds and was in
after two at 50, two strokes behind Carr. Larry Smith and local
course employee Anthony Russell posted a pair of 11 under par second
rounds and trailed Carr by 3 strokes at 51. Biesma, who was in the
group that posted a first round 9 under par, fired a second round 10
under par and was in after two at 53.
Moving back to Course #3 for the third round, Carr continued to
put pressure on the field, posting a third round 12 under par for a
three round total 72. Smith fired a third round 12 under par of his
own, tied for the second spot after three with Schults at 75. Peters
slipped a little in the third round only posting 8 under par, but
Biesma continued to stroke with a third round 11 under par, both in
after three at 78, six strokes behind Carr.
As the day's sun heated the carpets to full fluff and with
temperatures in the high 90s, the group moved back to Course #3 for
the final round. Scores across the field were much higher in the
final round, but Carr was able to post a final round 8 under par to
end his day first in the clubhouse at 100 for four rounds. Only
Biesma was able to maintain the pace, posting a final round 10 under
par, closing the gap but falling four strokes short of Carr at 104.
That score would prove to be good for second place as the other
leaders began to have trouble under the difficult conditions.
Schults slipped in the final round, posting only 4 under par in
the final round for a four round total 107 and third place. Smith
also had trouble, posting 3 under par in the final round for a four
round total 108 and a share of the fourth spot. Also tied at 108 was
Peters and Phil Kosobucki, who quietly put together consistent
rounds of 27-27-25-29.
After two great opening rounds, Russell posted final rounds of 6
under par each to end the day at 111. Also tied at 111 was Larry
Hoover, who put together incredibly consistent rounds of
28-27-28-28, and Bonnie White who fired bookend rounds of 10 under
par.
Rounding out the top 10 were Sanner and 2002 ProPutters.com
Classic Champion Zach Smith, both posting four round totals of 113
to split the final expense reimbursement slot.
