2005 PPA Indiana Medal Play Championship

10-11 September 2005 - Richmond, IN - Charlie Greenwalt, winner of the 1998 and 2003 Indiana State Medal Play Championship, added the 2005 title in a playoff over Tom Morrison. Greenwalt opened the two day championship with rounds of 23, 30, 26 and 22 for a 72 hole score of 101, 43 under par, and a five stroke lead over Tom Morrison (26-25-28-27 = 106) and Jerry Pinotti (28-23-26-29 = 106) with six other players within 10 strokes of the lead.

The championship moved from course 2 to course 3 at the Richmond, IN course for the final four rounds. Greenwalt opened the second day with a round of 30 that allowed Morrison to pull into a tie for the lead with a round of 25. Morrison's strong play in the fifth round did not carry over into the sixth round as he shot a round of 32 to fall two strokes behind Greenwalt who shot another round of 30. Jerry Pinotti moved into second place with rounds of 27 and 29 with Roger Beckerman in a tie for third with Morrison and Nate Nichols in fifth, four strokes behind Greenwalt.

The seventh round saw Morrison and Beckerman post rounds of 26 to move into a tie with Greenwalt who posted a round of 28. With Morrison, Beckerman and Greenwalt tied after 7 rounds at 189, 63 under par, Nate Nichols was four strokes behind in fourth at 193 with Jerry Pinotti, Mark Hasty and Shawn Gilliland in a tie for fifth at 196. The final round saw all three players, Morrison, Beckerman and Greenwalt, enter the back nine with a chance to win. Beckerman's chances for the title ended when he deuced the last six holes of the round to finish alone in third at 219 with a final round of 30. Morrison entered the final two holes with a one stroke lead over Greenwalt after a bogey on the "Y" hole on the back nine. Greenwalt, with honors on the 17th hole, aces to pull even with Morrison only to have Morrison ace the 17th hole to pull back into the lead with one hole to play. Greenwalt went on to ace the 18th hole to pull into a tie with Morrison who missed the 18th hole and forced a playoff. In the playoff Greenwalt defeated Morrison with the pivotal swing happening on the 15th hole as Greenwalt's ace was followed by a bogey three from Morrison.

Nate Nichols finished in fourth at 222 with James Weber and Tim Greenert in a tie for fifth at 226. Jerry Pinotti who entered the final two rounds in second place finished in a tie for eighth after closing rounds of 34 and 32.

Charlie Greenwalt won the 2005 Indiana PPA Player of the Year award as well as the 2005 Indiana Points Championship. Tom Morrison was voted the "Bill Hammons Sportsmanship Award" for the 2005 season.

10-11 September 2005 - Richmond, IN - Zach Smith trailed Scott Copeland by two strokes after the opening 36 holes of play in the 2005 APA Indiana State Championship. Smith closed the first day with rounds of 25 and 25 to take a three stroke lead on Copeland entering the second day of play.

Rounds of 30, 27, 27 and 32 were just enough for Smith to hold on to the victory and earn his first APA Medal Play State Championship title. Anthony Russell, 2005 APA World Match Play Champion, put together a charge entering the final four rounds eights strokes behind Smith. Russell posted an opening round of 31 but closed with rounds of 23, 26 and 29 to finish at 224, 64 under par, one stroke behind Smith at 223. Copeland's rounds of 27, 32, 26 and 30 were enough for a third place finish at 225.
