2005 PPA Springfield Open

13 August 2005 - Springfield, OH - Course 2 in Springfield, Ohio proved to be quite a challenge for the 17 PPA pros and 13 APA members playing in the 2005 PPA Springfield Open. The opening round saw just three PPA pros, James Weber (28), John Ventura (29) and Robb Titchell (29), and three amateurs, Scott Copeland (26), Tyler Lacey (28) and Rick Wohlgemuth (28), break 30.

2005 PPA Springfield Open Champions

A second round 27 by Dave McCaslin moved him from two strokes out of the lead into a one stroke lead at 57 with Jim Engel and James Weber in a tie for second at 58. A second consecutive 27 by Dave McCaslin earned him a one stroke victory with a score of 84, 24 under par. Jim Engel who entered the final round in a tie for second posted a final round 27 to finish alone in second at 85. Jim Cruse posted the best round of the day by a professional shooting a final round 26 to move into a tie for third with James Weber who shot a final round 28 while Roger Beckerman's final round 27 was enough to earn him a fifth place finish at 89.

In the amateur division, none of the players who broke 30 in their opening round could sustain that pace as each averaged 6 under or worse for their final two rounds. Scott Copeland's opening round 26 and second round 31 put him in the lead at 57 entering the final round. Tyler Lacey was in second at 58 with Josh Garrison and Rick Wohlgemuth in a tie for third at 59. Garrison's final round 27 vaulted him from a two stroke deficit to a two stroke margin of victory as he posted a 54 hole score of 86, 22 under par. Final rounds of 30 and 31 by Lacey and Copeland left them in a tie for second at 88 with Jeff Brown finishing in fourth at 90 with rounds of 30, 30 and 30.

In the match play, Bennie Williams won five straight matches to earn the win and his second qualification spot in the 2005 Great Lakes Tour Championship. Williams had shot 99 in the tournament posting rounds of 31, 36 and 32 before defeating Jim Cruse in the finals. Rick Wohlgemuth defeated Rob McGraner in the finals to also earn his second qualification spot in the 2005 APA Great Lakes Tour Championship.
