Tim Greenert and John Ventura (PPA Pros) and
Dennis Biesma and Barry Moore (APA) Win the
2005 PPA Great Lakes Tour Doubles Championship
16 July 2005 - Louisville, KY - At the completion of Saturday's
medal play competition, the APA putters took a quick break for lunch prior to
returning to competition in the Great Lakes Doubles Championship. Carpets had
dried significantly from the overnight storms, and during the break a rain
shower again meant wet carpets for the beginning of the Doubles competition.
The match got underway with the first round Better Ball Competition. A great front nine 8 under par gave the team of Anthony Russell and Sam Raizor the lead after the first round at 14 under par 22. Following close behind was the team of Ted Cain and Andy McCoy at 23. Tied at 23 was the team of Ricky Schults and Brandon Davis, with the entire rest of the field within another three strokes.

The second round was Alternate Stroke, with teams alternating starting players on odd and even holes. The team of Barry Moore and Dennis Biesma put together a great round of 10 under par to move into the lead after two rounds at 50. One stroke back at 51 was the team of Josh Garrison and Zach Smith. Russell/Raizor slipped back a little at but was tied after two rounds at 51.
The rains came again early in the final round and play was delayed for a few minutes while the storm passed over. The players returned to play, but was soon delayed again as more rain fell on the course. After a quick sweep from the broom brigade, the players returned to the course for the final race to the clubhouse on rain drenched carpets.
The final round was a combined score round, and the wet carpets took their toll on many of the players. Despite the carpets, Garrison/Smith shooting in the lead group put together a good final round with a combined score of 56 for a three round total 107 for the clubhouse lead. Shooting in the next to last group, Russell/Raizor struggled on the front nine and fell off the pace.
Also in the next to last group was Moore/Biesma who continued to keep the pace. A great deuce shot from down the hill behind the pipe on Hole 9 from Biesma kept the team alive through the front half of the course and a stroke ahead of Garrison/Smith. Moore overcompensated for the carpets on Hole 11, leaving the team struggling to make up ground on the final holes. But the team fought back through the back corner to pull within a stroke of the leaders. Double aces from the team on Hole 17 put them up by a stroke. Both shot safe on the final hole sealing the win.
Garrison/Smith maintained second place at 107. Russell/Raizor held on for a third place finish at 112, and Jeff Brown/Barb Mingo finished alone in fourth at 114. Scott Copeland/Rob McGraner finished fifth at 117, and Karen Raizor/David Goodwin took the last expense reimbursement slot at 118.
The win was the first for the Moore/Biesma team. Biesma was a member of the 2003 Virginia APA Doubles Championship Team, and the win was the first career state title for Moore. Both are members of a three man Dominion Cup Team that has dominated the Virginia Tour this season.
The Great Lakes Tour continues with the Bluegrass Classic on Sunday morning at 10 a.m. on Course #1 in Louisville.
