Matt Summey Wins First Major PPA Title at 2004 PPA Virginia State Championship Matt Summey 2004 PPA Virginia State Champion 10 October 2004 - Roanoke, VA - Daryl Freeman, Rusty Taylor and Robert Johnson opened the day in the lead at 25. Matt Summey fired a second round 23 to enter the third round in a tie for the lead at 51 with Brad Lebo. Summey closed the morning with a 25 for a three round total of 76. Despite starting the championship even after his first seven holes, Summey made 32 of his last 47 to take a three-stroke lead into the afternoon over Robert Johnson who was second at 79 followed by Daryl Freeman and Randy Reeves in a tie for third at 80. Brad Lebo was alone in fifth at 81. Johnson wasted no time in the afternoon by charging from three down to take a two-stroke lead by firing a 25 in round four while Summey struggled shooting just 30. Summey bounced back by firing a 25 in round five to close to within one of Johnson heading into the final round. Summey and Johnson were all square through five holes of the final round. Summey aced hole six to take a one-stroke lead, and Johnson quickly answered by making hole seven to square the match. Hole eight proved to be a key turning point as Summey aced it after a Johnson miss. Summey then aced the next three holes to open up a four-stroke lead with seven holes remaining. Johnson rallied by acing holes 12 and 13 to cut the deficit in half heading into hole 14. Johnson bogeyed hole 14, and Summey aced it to regain the four-stroke advantage. Summey then made holes 15 and 16 to clinch the championship, his first major title. He finished with a six round total of 157, 59 under par. Johnson finished in a tie for second with Brad Lebo at 162. Dave Taylor, propelled by a final round 22, finished alone in fourth at 163.
