Second Career Pro Victory on the
PPA Virginia State Tour
25 April 2004 - Richmond, VA - A final round
23 put
Robin Ventura over the top in a 32-player field on Course 1 in
Richmond on Sunday. The final round erased a two-shot deficit to
two-round leader
Gilbert
Sharpe and the win would mark the
second
career Virginia win for Ventura as she posted a final score of 76.
Ventura trailed by as many as three shots during the first round of
play. The tournament was dominated in the early round by
Vince
Batten. His 23 in the round gave him a three-shot lead over
Ventura and fellow Cincinnati player
Kevin
Lacey and South Carolina tour player
Rick
Culverhouse. Tied for fifth at 27 were 10 different players,
including Sharpe.

Batten lost his lead with a 29 and trailed Sharpe by a shot
through the second round. Sharpe fired a 24 to claim the lead at 51,
with Batten tied with
Daryl
Freeman for second at 52, and Culverhouse and Ventura tied with
Darrell
Anderson for fourth at 53. Scores were surprisingly high despite
the cool, overcast conditions in Richmond with the temperatures in
the mid to upper 60's throughout the day.
By the end of the third round, Sharpe, in the first group, shot 26 to
go in at 77 and it looked like he would secure his first win since he
miraculously won the State Championship in Lynchburg. Instead, Ventura,
who was playing in the final pairing, snuck ahead of Sharpe by posting a
23 to win her first Virginia tour event since April, 2002
and also posted her second PPA win of the season.
Ventura won with the score of 76, with Sharpe finishing alone in
second at 77. Lacey tied New York player
Gary Watson
for third at 78, and Anderson and Culverhouse finished in a tie with
Saturday's winner
Rusty Taylor
at 79.
Terry Clark
held off a couple of primed amateurs to win his respective division.
After a final round 27, Clark held off a serious final round charge from
Dennis Biesma,
who was coming strong with a 24 to miss out on the win. Clark won the
APA Division with a score of 81, with Biesma behind in second at 82, and
Jeff Carr
closing out in third at 83. There were just 16 players competing on
Sunday.
The Richmond portion of the Virginia State schedule returns on the
final weekend in June. The next Virginia tour stop will be in Abingdon,
Maryland.
Jonathan Moore will be out in defense of his PPA win on Saturday,
May 15 at 12:00 p.m.
on Course 1. Another tournament will follow on Sunday, May 16 starting
at 10:00 a.m.
