Randy Reeves Winner of 2004 PPA Virginia State Tour Event in Richmond, VA

18 July 2004 - Richmond, VA - The scene
shifted to Course 1, where 49 players proved that very low scores were
going to be the dominant factor. All but nine players broke 80 the
entire day, setting up what should be a
tremendous Week of the Nationals.
Not only was Randy Reeves one of the 40 that broke 80, he was the only one under
70 and he had a round no worse than 23 in his effort to win for the
first time this season on the PPA circuit. After sharing the lead with
John Bambling
in the opening round with a 22, Reeves continued his dominating
performance with a 23 and was now tied with
Manfred Stewart
at 45. Stewart did the reversal of Reeves' two-round scoring by carding
rounds of 23 and 22.
After the second round was fully completed, there were 18 players in
the 40's and the worst score was 56. Down the stretch, Reeves would
outlast Stewart in the final round by firing another 23 that would end
his day at 68 and would win by two shots over a quartet of players. The
68 shot by Reeves ties the all-time Virginia tour record set just six weeks ago in Lynchburg by
defending state champion Gilbert Sharpe.
Darrell Anderson,
Brad Lebo,
Wade Sahmel, and
Greg Ward all shot
70 to finish tied for second on Sunday. The cash line was at 76 and it
garnered a split.
But also winning again was
Michael Foster
for the group of 31 APA players. Foster came back from a two-shot
deficit in the first round and would wind up in a playoff with the
player who finished in second on Saturday. Foster shot 22 in the final
round to walk in the clubhouse at 73, but
Mike Mathews
tied him in the final round by posting a 23 to send it to a playoff.
Foster won the playoff by three shots for second consecutive win of the
weekend. Malcolm Shumaker was third at 74.
Bambling would finish alone in sixth at 71, three shots off the pace.
There were six players tied for seventh that included Stewart,
Daryl
Freeman, Randal
Smith, Buddy Taylor, and
Gary Watson.
The Virginia tour will be back in action on the weekend of August 7 &
8 in Martinsville. Their weekend will be a combined tour stop with the
North Carolina tour. Play will be on Course 2 starting on Saturday,
August 7 at 12:00 p.m.
and on Sunday, August 8 at 10:00 a.m.
