17 July 2004 - Richmond, VA -
Mike Brown finally
put himself in the win column for the first time this season, and it
came at the right opportunity just two days before the start of the
Nationals Week in Richmond. Brown put in a solid performance against 57
other professionals, but had to endure against
Bill Baus from
Cleveland Heights, Ohio in an
18 hole playoff and into sudden death for his
first win of the season on Saturday.Although Brown posted an opening
round 25, he was four shots out of the lead to
Bart Bason. Bason
continues to make a strong comeback to the PPA ranks as he opened up
play with a 21, which is the lowest round shot this season on Course 3
in a state event. Bason led by a slim one stroke over
Jonathan Moore,
who locally plays in Richmond. No 23's were recorded in the first round,
and there were only three 24's posted, including Swede
Hans Olofsson,
all-time 54-hole tournament record holder
Steve Lyon, and
2004
Virginia Open champion
Vince Batten.
Brown was tied with six others for the sixth spot after the first round.
Bason's fiery start was slowed down in the
second round, giving way to new leadership in the standings. Bason shot
30 in the second round to slip down to seventh and trailed by three
shots to Brown, Moore, and Olofsson, all tied
at 48. The next best score was 50, turned in by
Matt Summey,
Bill
Baus, and
Bill Kirby.
Brown finished the tournament with a 25 to end up at 73, while Baus
turned in a 23 to tie Brown for first setting up an 18-hole playoff.
After the playoff, both players faced sudden death. Both players shot 25
in the playoff before Brown aced the first hole of sudden death to win
his PPA event of the season.
Michael
Foster traveled from Missouri in preparations for the Nationals and
would win the APA Division on Saturday. Foster found himself trailing by
one shot to
Dennis Biesma and then was tied with him,
Larry Hoover,
and Jeff Carr
for second at 55 through the second round. All four trailed APA legend
Jeff Brown by
two shots after he fired a 24 to take the lead at 53. Foster dominated
in the final round by firing a 24 in the final round to secure his first
win of the season on the Virginia tour. Foster shot 79 to win by three
shots over Mike
Mathews, who posted a final round 23 to come from 10th place to
finish in second at 82. Carr finished alone in third at 83.
After Brown defeated Baus in the playoff in the tour record 58-player
field, Olofsson finished alone in third at 75. Six players finished tied
for fourth at 76, including Bason, Batten, Summey,
Darrell Britt,
Dave Taylor, and
Buddy Taylor.
Brad Lebo and
Tom O'Brien
finished out the top 10 on Saturday at 77.
The Virginia tour will conclude its weekend on Sunday, July 18 at
10:00 a.m.
