Gilbert Sharpe 25-22-21 = 68 for a new PPA Virginia Tour record in Lynchburg,
VA |
6 June 2004 - Lynchburg, VA - Although
skies became overcast and the weather at times were less
than perfect compared to Saturday, only
Gilbert Sharpe
showed how it was to be perfect on Sunday as he
produced record scores in
his final two rounds to win his first title of the
2004 season and first
since the
2004 Virginia State Championship he won
last season.
Sharpe would miss just seven holes in the final two rounds, including
just four within the final 27 to cruise to a six-shot win over
Darrell Anderson.
Sharpe shot rounds of 22 and 21 to finish with a final score of 68.
Anderson had the lead after the opening round with a 24, missing just
one hole on the back. Sharpe returned the favor by firing a 22 in the
second round to take the lead at 47 and led by a stroke on Anderson, who
shot another 24.
Justin Taylor
grabbed third by himself at 49, after a 23 in the second round.
Sharpe continued to blow it open into the final round, missing just
three holes and fired another 10 on the back to pull away with a
commanding six-shot win. Sharpe aced 18 to finish at 68, which set the
modern Virginia tour 54-hole tournament eclipsing the
record score of 69 that was set by
Brad Lebo
back in a 2002 tournament in Richmond. Sharpe also shot that score
without making the fifth hole, a relatively automatic hole that was
playing inconsistent at times on Sunday.
Anderson finished in second at 74, with Lebo finishing in third at
77, after a final round 23. Taylor and
James White
finished out the top five at 78.
Conway
Coffey swept the field in the APA Division. Coffey fired a second
round 21 to lead by three shots over
Malcolm
Shumaker, and would hang on despite firing a final round 32. Coffey
won for the fourth time with a final score of 78.
Dennis Biesma
fired a final round 27 to jump to second at 80, while third went to
Shumaker at 81.
Anderson grabbed his second World Match
Play spot in the tournament.
Rick Rybaczek
grabbed the North Carolina State and Match Play spots, while
Greg Newport won the North Carolina two-day low medalist spot.
The next event will be in High Point for the North Carolina tour on
the weekend of June 19 & 20. Those weekends will comprise of the Wayne
Hancock Memorial and Barbara Nance Memorial that will be on Course 1.
The Virginia tour sees action again on the weekend of June 26 & 27 in
Richmond, with the Virginia Open taking part on the 27th on Courses 1 &
3.
