Already one of two players in the Virginia tour history to complete the Virginia slam, Lebo's victory in Charlottesville began a run to a second slam. Lebo was sharing the first round with Russell Sigmon, Jr. and Jeff Spainhour. Then, Lebo took the outright lead for good as he posted a 26 to lead by three shots over Bill Baus. Lebo still played consistent during the third of the four rounds by firing a 27 to go in the clubhouse with the lead at 79. Sigmon shot his second 26 of the day to move into second at 82 and was three off the lead, while Baus was in third at 83. Lebo saved his great play for the final round. After aces on five of the first eight holes, he closed out the final round with 10 consecutive aces. The stretch run garnered him a final round 21 and would win the Dogwood Festival Open by 10 shots over Gilbert Sharpe and Randal Smith. Lebo's round of 21 became the new course record and the 10-shot win in Charlottesville has happened for the second time in the last three years. Greg Newport won the 2002 Virginia State Championship in dominating afternoon fashion. For the day, Lebo also set the four-round Dogwood Open record with a score of 100, while Gilbert Sharpe and Smith was second at 110. Mike Brown, in search of a win here to complete his Slam on the tour, finished in fourth at 112, while Sigmon ended up in fifth at 113. Dennis Biesma trailed Barry Moore by five shots through the second round in the APA Division and rallied to tie Moore before pulling away in the final round. Moore had the lead after two rounds at 56, with Conway Coffey four back at 60 and tied for second with Shayne Shiflett and Biesma at 61 in fourth. Biesma would put the charge on in the final two rounds as he put in a 27 to place him in a tie with Moore of 88 and then would take control from there with another 27 in the final round to win out by five shots. Biesma claimed his first major win in Virginia with a final score of 115. Moore did finish alone in second at 120, while third went to Coffey at 121. Chuck Dibbs and Walter Kolb were tied for fourth at 124. Special thanks goes out to Lloyd Wood, course owner, for hosting another great weekend in Charlottesville.
