Rusty Taylor Wins in his Home State of Maryland for Second Win on 2004 PPA Virginia State Tour

15 May 2004 - Abingdon, MD - It took a final round 23 and a lot of help in the final round from two-round leader Mike Brown for Rusty Taylor to win the first of two events played in Abingdon, Maryland this weekend. Taylor had a solid outing himself, but it appeared Brown was going to be in the driver's seat as he was up four strokes and shot a score of 44 for two rounds with rounds of 23 and 21.

On a bright, sunny day and with temperatures in the upper 80's, unusual for the Baltimore area for mid-May, 20 pros and 10 amateurs coming from Cleveland, Ohio to Greensboro, North Carolina participated in Maryland for just the second season since the course opened up in early 2003. Rusty Taylor made one of the shortest trips to a tournament site and it paid dearly to his third PPA win of the year and second on the Virginia tour.

It looked like it would be Brown taking in his first win of the season by starting out with rounds of 23 and 21 to go into the clubhouse with the lead at 44. Taylor was the only other player in the 40's, but was four back at 48. In those two rounds, Brown only missed eight holes. He would miss eight alone in the final round as that round got him to shoot 28 to finish at 72. It would be costly for the Philadelphia product due to Taylor firing a 23 in the final round to finish at 71, enough for a one-shot win over Brown.

Another 21 was shot in the tournament, but it was in the APA Division and it was a key factor to a walloping win for Dennis Biesma. Biesma broke a first round tie with Bonnie White when each shot 26. Biesma fired the 21 in the middle round to go in at 47 and had a six-shot lead. The lead continued to grow, but Biesma finished out with an eight-shot win over Barry Moore.

Biesma shot 76 to grab his first win of the season. Moore was second at 84, and White was ten back in third at 86.

Rounding out the top five in the Pro Division were Vince Batten in third at 74, Dave Taylor, in his first PPA event of the season, finishing in fourth at 76, and Rick Rybaczek and Buddy Taylor winding up in the fifth position at 79.

The Virginia tour concludes its play on Sunday, May 16 at 10:00 a.m. in Abingdon on Course 1.
