Rainey Statum,
playing in his second event of the year, and
Brice Bergesen
held the opening round lead with both shooting 10 under 26. The rest of
the field was tight behind Brice and Rainey with six of the remaining 10
players between 28 and 30. The second round saw Rainey take the lead by
himself. A back nine 10 gave him 9 under 27 for the round and left him
two strokes ahead of
Jeffrey Smith whose 11 under 25 set a new course record. Another
27 in the third round increased Rainey's lead
to five strokes going to the second day.
Brice Bergesen was the player now in second and Jeffrey Smith along
with Lee Messinger,
who's 13 under 23 included a perfect front nine and reset the course
record, were tied for third six strokes back
of Rainey. The only other players with 10 strokes of the lead going to
the second day were
Mike Chisum and
Keith Barfield
each eight back.
Rainey took control of the event early on Sunday. With some rain
overnight the course was a little damp to start and Rainy made the best
adjustments. His ten under 26 was best in the fourth
round by three strokes and his lead went from six to ten strokes
with two rounds to go. An 11 under par 25 in
the 5th round sealed the win for Rainy. Brice was able to hang on for
second place one ahead of Lee Messinger who took third alone. State
spots went to Rainey Statum, Mike Chisum,
Rod Phillips and
Keith Barfield.
After the first day in amateur division there were only three players
who still had a chance at the title.
Seth Smith,
playing his first event of year, lead at 87.
James Taylor
was one back and
Adam Sahmel was five behind. No other player was within ten strokes
of Seth. Seth dominated play over the second day increasing his lead in
every round finishing at 40 under 176. James Taylor took second 13 back
and Adam Sahmel finished third. State Spots went to Seth
Smith, James Taylor,
Carey Bailey
and Trevor Lewin,
who defeated
Steve Yancey in an 18-hole playoff.
