Lake Charles, LA -
Greg Simpson
had traveled from Lake Charles to Denton, Texas and back over the Friday
and Saturday prior to the day's tournament. Approximately 15
hours of travel
time. Apparently all the travel did not affect
his game. Greg held the lead after the first round at 12 under 24.
Jeffrey Smith
was one back with two other players at 26 and another two at 27. After a
solid front nine of the second round Greg started to slow down, a 2
under 16 left him with an 8 under 28 second round total and a two stroke
lead over Jeffrey Smith,
Charles Cox,
and Lee
Messinger. The last round saw Jeffrey smith shoot a 10 on the front
nine to take control of the tournament. He played a safe last nine holes
to win easily at 30 under 78 and claim a state spot. Greg Simpson and
Charles Cox came in second four back with
Brice
Bergesen,
Joel Baker, and
Chris Breedlove five back in 4th. Additional state spots went to
Wade Sahmel
and Joel Baker in match play competition.
In the amateur division was very tight after the first round with
seven of the tem competitors between 28 and 30.
Chance Marett
took total control of the event with a second round 14 under 22, the
best round shot on the day. Chance ended at 29 under 79 winning by four
strokes over Kenny
Beck and seven over
Dave Blalock
and taking a state spot. Additional state spots went to
Mickey DeLucca
and Dave Blalock in match play.
The number one course has been the easiest course on the Texas Tour
over the last few years and low scores were still apparent. There is
talk that with the change to course 2 in Killeen the title of easiest
course may change this year.
