4 April 2004 - Hurst, TX - A second
beautiful day greeted the players of the Texas Tour at the Hurst
location. Gary
Reed jumped to early lead with 12 under 24, which gave him a
one-stroke lead over
Jeffrey Smith.
Lee
Messinger, playing in the first group, came in with 13 under 23 in
the second round and was looking to jump into contention but Gary Reed
followed up Lee's 23 with one of his own. Going to the last round Gary
had put most of the field out of contention at more than seven strokes
back, only Lee Messinger still had a reasonable chance to catch Gary
four back. Lee's last round 11 under 25 forced Gary to play at least a
solid last round which he did at 9-under 27. This gave Gary his first
win of the year and a state spot. Additional state spots went Lee
Messinger and
Cliff
Matthews in match play competition.
Chance
Marett and Kenny
Beck shared the lead after the first round in the amateur division
and Chance shot a nice 10 under 26 in the second to take control of the
tournament three ahead of Kenny. Kenny picked up one stroke on Chance
over the front nine of the last round to close to two behind. Meanwhile
Mike Huckaby
was making the first 10 holes to try and get into contention with 8
holes to go he had closed to within four of the lead. But three bogey
strokes over the last 8 holes derailed his chances. Kenny Beck continued
his strong play through the back nine going into hole 17 he had only
missed one hole on the back and two par's would clinch the win. But rub
of the green got him on hole 17, a bridge hole with a shallow cup, his
short duce putt jumped back out of the hole putting him back into a tie
with Chance. Kenny could still take the win by making 18 but a good putt
lipped out.
James Taylor also tried to get in the tournament his course record
15 under 21in the last round left him two back of the playoff between
Chance and Kenny. When the playoff reached the 17th hole it was all
square. Chance, putting first, made the ace to give him a one-stroke
lead going to the last hole. When Chance missed the last hole Kenny
again found himself at 18 needing to ace it. This time, however, he
needed it to stay alive. Again Kenny lipped out of 18 giving Chance the
title and a state spot. Additional state spots went to Kenny Beck and
James Taylor in match play competition.
