David Lynch
Wins Five Way Playoff in
Ft. Worth, TX
10 July 2004 - Ft. Worth, TX - The Texas
Putting Tour continued it's season at the Fort Worth Westside course.
For the first time this year it was a Texas summer day with temperatures
in the 90's and a high humidity, but it wasn't too bad for a weekend in
July.
The first round saw
Jeffrey Smith and
Brice Bergesen
both shoot 8 under 28's to hold a lead of one stroke over four other
players. At the end of the second round the leaders were Brice and
David Lynch but
quite a few players were still in contention with 5 other players within
three strokes of lead. As the groups started rolling in on the last
round it was obvious it was going to be a tight finish. Brice, playing
in the first group came in at 20 under 88.
Joel Baker and
Rodney Phillips
playing in the second group behind Brice also came in at 20 under 88.
With 7 players left to complete their round another four players still
had an opportunity to get to or better than the 88's in the clubhouse.
Cliff Matthews
who needed 13 on the back to reach 88 fell out of contention early on
the last nine. Jeffrey
Smith, also needing a 13 on the last nine to reach 88 came to the
tough 18th needing ace. He drained it to shoot the 5 under and tie at 88
in the clubhouse.
Steve Tanton, playing in the same group with Jeffrey, needed a 6
under 12 on the last nine to reach the magic 88 mark. Steve played a
great back nine and came to 18 with a chance to get there. His putt just
lipped out leaving him one back of 88.
The last player with a chance to get to or beat the 88 mark was David
Lynch playing in the last group. David looked in really good shape going
to the last nine needing only a 3 under to shoot an 87. After missing
10,11, and 12 David made the 13th hole and with the easy 14 through 16
stretch coming up it looked like David might dash the hopes of the 88's
waiting in the clubhouse. David, however, would not make it easy on
himself. He missed all three holes with poor putts and left himself
needing to make the much tougher 17th or 18th just to get into a
playoff. After just missing the 17th hole David was down to his last
opportunity. He calmly stepped up a drilled the 18th to come in at 88.
A five-way playoff between Brice Bergesen, Joel Baker, Rodney
Phillips, Jeffrey Smith, and David Lynch was on. David jumped to an
early lead making 5 of the first six holes and with nobody else better
than 2 under through that point David was threatening to run away with
it. A bogey on the 7 hole set David back a bit but he was able to
recover a play solid the rest of the way to take the win and his fourth
state spot. An additional spot went to Joel Baker in match play
competition.
After two rounds of play in the amateur division
Chance Marett
and Dave
Blalock were tied for the lead with
Steve
Yancey and
Rob Martin one
behind. The only other player within four strokes of the lead was
Rhet Wylie to
back. With nine holes to go Rob Martin had tied Chance and Dave had
fallen two strokes off the pace. The only other player left who had a
chance to get in the game was Rhet Wylie at three back of the lead. Dave
and Rhet were able to make up the ground on Chance over the last nine
holes but not on Rob who took the win and a state spot by two strokes
over all three players. Additional state spots went Rhet Wylie and
Jason
Sheffield in match play competition.
