Cliff
Matthews Posts Three Stroke Victory in Arlington, TX
12 September 2004 - Arlington, TX - The
Texas Putting tour held it's 19th event of the year at the
Arlington-Division course. Brice Bergesen and Gary Reed held the opening
round lead at 9 under 27 with Mike Baldoza and Keith Barfield one stroke
back. A second round 11 under 25 by National Champion Cliff Matthews
gave him the lead with Rodney Phillips, who shot a 10 under 26, going to
the last round. With seven other player within four strokes of Rodney
and Cliff it could have a tight last round but Cliff shot a solid 10
under 26 with 13's on both nines to take the win by three strokes over
Rodney in second. Brice Bergesen and David Lynch finished tied for 3rd
four behind Cliff. State spots went to Keith Barfield, Jody Kimble, and
Jude Prather.
Local amateur Rob Martin's first two rounds gave
him a three-stroke lead over his nearest pursuer, James Taylor, going
into the last round. A poor last round by Rob, which included four bogey
strokes, opened the door for someone to catch him, but with no player in
the field shooting better than six under in the last round Rob's lead
held up. He finished at 18 under 90 one stroke ahead of James Taylor and
Danny Hoel.
