Tony Jackson Earns His First Victory of the 2004 Season on His Home Course

Tony Jackson
2004 PPA South Carolina State
Match Play Champion

1 August 2004 - Spartanburg, S.C. - Tony Jackson won his first tournament of the season on Sunday and won it on his home course. Jackson held off a charging Randy Reeves down the stretch and won the tournament by one stroke.

Conditions on Sunday were a carbon copy of Saturday's play, warm and humid. Scoring was dropped by almost a stroke per round, but the course was playing relatively the same from just 24 hours prior to playing. Once again, the leading score was 25 and that was turned in by Daryl Freeman.

The second round finally produced some lower scoring. Greg Ward added the tournament's low round of the day of 22 to offset the 30 he shot in the first round to move at 52. But Ward was trailing Jackson after he shot 24 to move into sole possession of the lead at 51. Freeman dropped into a three-way tie for third with Michael Hitt and Todd Fowler at 53.

Jackson had enough of a lead to hold on to the victory. Jackson shot 26 to finish at 77, but Reeves came in with a 23 to finish a stroke off the lead at 78. Ward wound up in third at 79, while Fowler finished alone in fourth at 80. Rick Culverhouse, Randy Orr, and Vance Randall all came in a tie for fifth at 81. Then, 82 was tied for eighth and the last cash spots.

Since winning his APA National Championship last week in Richmond, Ricky Schults has continued to find himself winning State events. Schults rallied from a two-shot deficit to two-round leader Brian Hutchins and shot a final round 24 to take back first place, a position he held after the opening round. Schults posted a score of 78 to win by one shot over Chris Alley and Jeff Carr, each finishing at 79.

The South Carolina will return to Spartanburg at the end of September for the 2004 State Championship on Course 2. The next events for the tour will be on the weekend of August 21st and 22nd in Martinez, GA on the Blue Course.
