Randy Reeves
Cruises to His First Victory of the 2004 Season on South Carolina Tour
22 August 2004 -
Martinez, GA -
Randy Reeves was
the only no-show from Saturday's play in Martinez and came there on
Sunday to pull off his first win of the season on the South Carolina
tour. Reeves used a second round 22 to eclipse the field of 16 players
and won by two shots over
Jay Klapper on
Sunday.
Scoring once again on the Blue Course was on the high
side. Four players jumped out to opening round 26's,
including Saturday's winner
Rick Baird.
Reeves was only a shot out of the lead before making a
statement to the top of the board. Reeves posted a 22 in the
second round, which was good enough to post the low round of
the tournament. Reeves held a five-shot lead in the process
at 49, with
Rick
Culverhouse and
Robert
Johnson tied at 54 for second.

Reeves' lead was more than enough to hold in the final
round. Reeves shot 29 to win by two shots and finished at
78. Jay Klapper tried to catch Reeves and shot 23 to finish
two shots out of the lead and was alone in second at 80.
Culverhouse finished in third at 82. Baird, Johnson,
Dan Anders,
and Tony
Jackson rounded out the top five at 83. This was Reeves'
first win in Augusta since he won the
2002 Georgia State Championship
two years ago, a tournament that put him in the record books
with the current
eight-round tournament scoring record of 192.
Jeff
Carr came from two strokes down and then won in a
playoff to keep his Martinez win streak in tact. Carr posted
a score of 82 and won the playoff over
Chris Hudson. Carr would win for the sixth consecutive
trip in Augusta and in the process gave him the South
Carolina APA Player of the Year.
Russell Taylor finished in third at 84.
With just one tournament left in the South Carolina
season, the race for Player of the Year has all but ended.
Andy
Coradini clinched the title over reigning Player of the
Year
Frank Warren. Even if Coradini does not play the day
before the State Championship, the worst he would win the
title would be by two points over Warren.
The South Carolina tour will head to Spartanburg on
Saturday, September 25. They will play on Course 2 with the
South Carolina State Championship to be played on Sunday,
September 26. The APA will play their State Championship
over the course of the weekend.
