Robert Johnson Defeats Kevin Garrett in Playoff for Win in Richmond

6 April 2003 - Richmond, VA - For the second straight day, an 18-hole playoff determined the outcome of a PPA Virginia State Tour event in Richmond. This time around, Robert Johnson and Kevin Garrett faced off after both players posted 54-hole scores of 72.

Both Johnson and Garrett had trailed Saturday's champion in Mike Brown after he had the lead by himself at 46 after the second round before sliding off the pace in the final round to finish two back of them. Garrett, who had the first round share of the lead with Brown at 22, overcame a one-shot deficit with a final round 25, while Johnson came from four down and posted a 22 of his own in the final round to join Garrett at the clubhouse lead at 72. Johnson had to fire a back nine 11 and had the shot to win on 18, but his putt missed short and lipped over to the left.

In the playoff, both players fought it out on the front. Neither player could gain an advantage over the other. However, Johnson was 10-under after 15, while Garrett was a stroke back. Johnson opened the doors on three occasions down the final three in play by leaving 16 short, overshot 17 and made a great deuce and barely missed 18 to the left. Garrett could not gain on the last three, and had the chance to extend the playoff, but his putt on 18 missed left as well and gave the win outright to Johnson. Johnson collects his first tour win this season as a result.

Chris Kern earned his third win in just four tries this season after he missed out his opportunity to win on Saturday after a slow start. On Sunday, Kern got back on the winning track by easily posting a seven-shot victory over Chuck Dibbs. Kern fired rounds of 26, 25, and 24 for a final score of 75. Dibbs was second at 82, while Mike Matthews finished in third at 83.

Brown came in third to close out a good weekend for him with a score of 74. Wesley Pollard and Matt Summey rounded out the top five by tying themselves for fourth at 75.

The Virginia tour will compete again on the weekend of May 17th and 18th in Lynchburg as they will be teaming with the PPA North Carolina State Tour. Action gets underway at 12:00 p.m. on the 17th on Course 1.
