Summey Opens
2003 Season with Victory in Richmond, VA
22 March 2003 - Richmond, VA -
Matt Summey
had a solid and strong showing to open the Virginia Putting Tour season
of 2003 despite damp carpeting from two days of torrential rain and high
winds. In a field of 25 on a course where a six-round world record was
set last season and scores usually in the neighborhood of 9 to 11-under
par each round, the field found difficulty shooting low with the adverse
conditions. The low score after the first
round was 25 that was achieved by
Darrell
Anderson,
Mike Brown,
Gary Moore,
and Jonathan
Moore. Summey was in at 26, and in sole possession of fifth. With
the anticipation of improvement, scores continued to worsen as 54 was
the cash line after two rounds. Brown turned in a respectable low round
of 23 to take the lead at 48. His lead would be by two over Summey and
Anderson.
Vince
Batten had turned in the best round of the day in the second round
at 22, but it put him just three back of Brown and would not gain
advantage from there. Summey continued to dominate in the stretch run as
he used a second consecutive 24 to beat out Brown and Anderson by one
stroke. Summey's ace on 16 sealed the win, his third of his short Pro
career. The scores of 26, 24, and 24 were good enough to get him in the
winner's circle on his home course in Richmond by shooting a final score
of 74. Brown and Anderson each finished one back in second at 75.
Manfred Stewart posted a final round 24 to end up in fourth at 78, while
Batten slipped to a fifth place finish at 79. Interestingly enough that
only 1/5 of the field broke 80, which was highly unusual for a course
like Course 3 in Richmond.
The amateurs had trouble themselves shooting low for the day. Only
one player managed to break 80 in the 12-man field and that would be of
Chris Kern.
Kern trailed by four strokes early in the contest, but got hot in the
second round to pass first round leader
Mike Matthews
and held a two-stroke lead on him, going in at 53. He was still trailing
two-round leader
Amy Smith, who posted a 25 in the second round to take the lead at
52 before she hit her own stumbling block in the final round.
Kern pulled it out at the end as he and Matthews each fired a 26 in
the final round, while Smith slipped a bit with a 29. Kern's final round
gave him a two-stroke win over Matthews with a final score of 79.
Matthews managed to tie Smith for second at 81, while Chuck Dibbs and
Jonathan Koo
each wound up tied for fourth at 85.
The Virginia tour will continue its weekend on Course 3 in Richmond
on Sunday, March 23, at 11:00 a.m.
