Jeff Spainhour Grabs First PPA Victory Since 1990 with Win in Richmond

12 July2003 - Richmond, VA - Not since 1990 has Jeff Spainhour reached the top of the standings in a PPA event. Since returning full-time in 2001, Spainhour has had ample opportunities to return to the promise land, only to come up short. This Saturday in Richmond, Spainhour broke a five-way tie for first at 49 through two rounds and won it by himself when he fired a final round 25 for a two-shot win.

Jeff Spainhour

All eyes were on Spainhour after the opening round after posting a 23 for an incredible two-shot lead over Gary Moore, Jonathan Moore, and Dave Taylor. On this picture perfect day on Course 3, a two-shot advantage is considered a huge lead. Spainhour lost his sole possession of the lead after the second round, but was still sharing a piece of the lead.

In the second round, Spainhour fired a 26, but members of the field would fire a 24, that included Jonathan Moore, and also a 23 that came from Vince Batten, Mike Brown, and Gilbert Sharpe. All five were leading the way with a 36-hole score of 49, with Rusty Taylor firing a 22 in the second round (the shared low round of the tournament) to move to within a shot of the lead.

In the final round, Spainhour would break the tie as he fired a final round 25. Brown, Moore, and Sharpe could each only fire a 26 to finish two shots off the pace and Taylor would fire a 27 to finish three back of first. Spainhour wins his first PPA event since 1990 with a final score of 74. Brown, Moore, and Sharpe finished in second at 76, and Taylor was fifth at 77.

The Virginia tour returns to action on Sunday, July 13, at 9:00 a.m. on Course 3 in Richmond. This event is the Virginia Open, the event that in 2002 set the new six-round world record accomplished by Brad Lebo.

Chuck Dibbs Wins APA Division

The APA Division was won by Chuck Dibbs after six consecutive aces to close out the day earned him a two-shot win, coupled with a disastrous last round by Chris Kern. Kern went into the final round in search of his seventh win of the season and was holding a two-shot lead on his own, with Dibbs four back of the lead.

Dibbs aced out the final six holes and completed the round with a 25 to win his first APA event of the season. Dibbs shot a score of 80, while Kern's 31 in the final round dropped him into a second place tie with Marty Handschuh with a score of 82.

APA Recap (by Chuck Dibbs)

The temperature and scores were both in the 80s for the competitors of the Virginia State Tour APA division on Saturday, July 12. On a course that has yielded some very low scores of late, a score of 80 was good enough for Chuck Dibbs to claim victory, but it wasnt easy. Trailing player of the year front runner Chris Kern and Mike Matthews by four shots heading into the final nine of the last round, Dibbs started slowly on the inward nine. After acing the 10th hole, he missed 11 and then pulled a putt that hit the small face of an end-long rectangle on 12. He watched helplessly as his ball rolled back to him and out of the hole. After re-teeing, Dibbs was able to convert a tee mat deuce, and then aced the final six holes for a final round 25 and a two shot victory.
