Tom Adair Defeats Jon Drexler in a Playoff for Win in Tyler, TX
3 May 2003 - Tyler, TX - After the first round at the Tyler course a very tight event was shaping up. There was a four way tie for first at 29 with the entire field within four strokes. After the second round four players had pulled slightly away from the rest of the field. Jon Drexler and Mike Baldoza were in first at 15 under 57 with Lee Messinger and Tom Adair one back. With nine holes to go the same four players were still within one of each other but Tom Adair and Mike Baldoza had switched positions with Tom tied with Jon Drexler and Mike one back with Lee Messinger.
None of the four players were able to put together a great last nine but none had a bad nine either. In the end the one stroke lead Jon and Tom held going to the last nine held up and they ended up tied at 23 under 87. Mike finished in third one back and Lee was fourth, two back.
After 12 holes of the playoff Tom was one stroke ahead, a bogey by Jon on the 13th gave Tom a two stroke lead which he was able to consolidate by making the next three holes to take the title and a state spot.
While Jon and Mike just missed out on a win both players were able to take state spots. Jon defeated Jimmy Clark and Steve Armstrong while Mike beat Jeffrey Huffman and Lee Messinger.
The amateur division saw local Rhet Wylie dominate play, which included a great second round, and take five stroke victory and a state spot. His score was the best of the day by two shots over players in all divisions. Mickey DeLucca took second with Neal Armstrong one back in third.
The available match play spots went to Gary Plain and Greg Cole.
