Steve Norman Posts Three Stroke Victory in Lewisville, TX

17 August 2003 - Lewisville, TX - For the first time since the new Hurst course was built in the late 90's the Texas Tour had a new course to play. The Lewisville course sitting just off Interstate 35E and a little south of Lake Lewisville greeted the players early Sunday morning. The day promised to be hot one with predicted temperatures to rise near 100 with a high humidity. While Saturday saw the Texas Tour on one of the hardest course on the schedule, Sunday saw the players tackle one of the easier courses with only the Lake Charles course's with lower stroke averages.

The first round saw Steve Tanton, David Lynch and Tom Adair all shoot 10-under 26 to take the lead. Of the 13 players only one shot higher than 30 in the first round. The second round saw Steve Norman tie David Lynch for the lead with an 11-under 25. Tom Adair fell one off the pace and Steve Tanton fell two back and was tied by three other players. A duplicate 11-under 25 in the last round sealed the win and his first state for Steve Norman. A 6-under back nine kept David Lynch in second three back with Joel Baker and Keith Barfield tied for third. Match play spots went to Lee Messinger and Steve Armstrong.

In two paring quirks the first group of the day was the J group with Jeffrey Smith, Joel Baker, and Joel Woodall. The second group was the Steve group with all three Steve's in the event, Norman Tanton and Armstrong, paired together.

The amateur division was in for a big surprise when Chance Marett in his second ever event after signing up just a few weeks ago shot a perfect back nine and a 12-under 24 in the first round. This was, of course, the course record and also the lowest round shot that day. This gave Chance a three stoke lead over Trevor Lewin and Adam Sahmel. The second round saw both Trevor and Adam close the gap by one stroke but a last round 26 by Chance sealed the deal and gave him the win and a state spot. Rhet Wylie also shot a 26 in the last round come from off the pace and take second place four back. Steve Yancey and James Taylor took the match play spots.
