Brice Bergesen Sweeps Opening Weekend With Second Victory in Lake Charles, LA
23 March 2003 - Lake Charles, LA - Players were looking forward to second day at Lake Charles and it showed after the first round was complete. Three players, David Lynch, Rainey Statum and Lee Messinger, were tied for the lead at 13 under 23 with three other players within 2 strokes. After the completion of the second round the event was a three horse race between David Lynch, Brice Bergesen and Rainey Statum who were 5 clear of the rest of the field. None of the players had their best round during the third but Brice continued to make Aces at the same rate and only two bogeys kept him from breaking 70 for the event. The win gave Brice a second state spot and sweep of the weekend events.

PPA Touring ProThe match play events for the other two state spots were very tight with only one match being won by a score better than 2 to 1. There was one 3 hole sudden death match between Steve Tanton and Don Parker and an 8 hole sudden death match between Andy Gaiser and Lee Messinger which featured Lee making 14 holes in a row and only picking up two holes in that stretch one being the last hole of sudden death. In end the spots went to David Lynch who defeated Lee Messinger by only missing three holes through the first 15 to take a 4 with 3 win and Byron Kirby, who defeated both Jeffrey Smith and Rainey Statum to claim his spot.
In the amateur division Ken Beck shot an outstanding last two rounds of 23 under 49 to take the title and a weekend sweep. Again Ken was not trying for a state spot so the medal play spot went to second place finisher Jason Sheffield.
Trevor Lewin defeated Mike Huckaby and Adam Sahmel to take one of the match play spots and Dave Blalock defeated Jack Ramsey and Mickey DeLucca to take the other.
