Jeffrey
Huffman Posts Two Stroke Victory in Beaumont, TX
19 July 2003 - Beaumont, TX - The Texas
Putting Tour held it's 14th event of the season in southeast Texas at
the Beaumont course. After the first round local Pro
Jeffrey
Huffman and
Wade Sahmel
held a three stroke lead over four other players at 9-under 27. The
second round saw Wade take a solo lead of two strokes over Jeffrey
Huffman with
Jeffrey Smith and
Lee
Messinger four back and
Rainey
Statum and
Steve
Armstrong five back. The tough Beaumont course finally caught Wade
in the last round and his 4-under 32 opened the door for the rest of the
field. Only Jeffrey Huffman was able to take advantage of Wade's final
round, his 8-under 28 gave him a two stroke victory and a state spot.
Wade did hold on to second with Steve Armstrong in third and Lee
Messinger taking fourth.
Even though Wade had had his problems in the last round of
stroke play he came back strong in match play to claim a state
spot beating Don Parker and
Byron
Kirby. The other state spot went to Lee Messinger who beat
Steve Tanton and Steve Armstrong.
After the first round in the amateur division with 7 players within 2
stokes it was anybody's game. In the second round the star was
Jason
Sheffield, his 10-under 26 was the best round of the day in either
division. Going to the last round, though, the event was still tight
with Jason and Kenny
Beck tied for lead and
Rhet Wylie two
back. In the end both leaders faltered in the last round and allowed
other players an opportunity for the title. It was Rhet Wylie who took
advantage, his 6-under 30 was just enough to give him the win and a
state spot. Jason Sheffield did manage to hang on for second one back
along with Dave
Blalock.
The two remaining state spots went to
Adam Sahmel
and Jack Ramsey
in match play.
