Andy Coradini Posts First Victory on PPA South Carolina Tour Since 1998
15 June 2003 - Spartanburg, SC - It has been just over five seasons since Andy Coradini posted a victory on the South Carolina tour. In all of the years he has competed regularly on the tour, Coradini has only notched his fifth career win there, and has won for the first time since June 7, 1998 after taking command in the final round to win by three shots.
Sunday's tournament on Course 1 started two hours earlier from Saturday's event, prompting early low scores. Within the first round alone, 14 of the 31 professionals posted rounds of 10-under and better. Saturday's winner Frank Warren continued his impressive weekend stint by being the first round leader with a course-record tying 21 (shared with Robert Johnson and Tony Varnadore). Coradini fired a 22, along with Varnadore, and three other players fired opening round 23's.
The second round created a log jam on the leader board as eight players were in the house at 51 or better. Among those in the house leading were Coradini and Warren, whom each shared the 36-hole lead at 48, and Rick Baird and Michael Hitt sharing third at 49. Tony Pack was out in fifth and two off the mark.
It would be Coradini's chance to turn it up in the final round as the 1993 National Champion broke it open in the final round. Coradini fired the round's low 24 to separate himself from the closely contested field and walked out with a three-shot win over Baird, Hitt, and Warren. Coradini's winning score of 72 marked the lowest winning score this season on the South Carolina tour and it marked his first win since he won in Forest City in 1998, a span of 95 events since that win.
Brian Hutchins came out as the winner of the APA Division after he brought himself out of a five-player jam through two rounds, where two shots separated the top five. Hutchins was in a three-way tie for second and trailed leader Christopher Alley, who was going for his third win of 2003, by one shot. Hutchins also had to fire the third round's low score to come out on top in this division, as he carded a 26 to win by two shots over Alley, Ricky D. Schults, and Saturday's winner Larry Smith. Hutchins won with a final score of 82, with the other three finishing at 84.
Baird, Hitt, and Warren all finished in a tie for second at 75. Ironically, Baird and Hitt both shot identical rounds of 23, 26, and 26 in their efforts. Four players finished tied for fifth at 79. Those players include Darrell Britt, Tony Pack, Saturday's runner-up Tony Jackson, and reigning 2002South Carolina State Champion Robert Johnson. After 14 players were on pace to finish at 78 after playing the first round, only eight broke 80 as the late morning scoring showed its effects toward the afternoon. Rick Baird earned the one day South Carolina State spot and Randy Orr earned the two day spot.
The South Carolina tour returns to action on the weekend of July 12 & 13 as they head back out to Forest City, North Carolina for the second time in 2003. The weekend this time will be on Course 1 and action will get underway at 12:00pm on the 12th.
