Greg Ward Defeats Tony Pack in Playoff
to Win the Martinez Open

Greg Ward

13 September 2003 - Martinez, GA - It took Greg Ward almost six months to finally notch his second South Carolina win after opening the 2003 season with a win at Forest City. Ward's win was achieved when he won in a playoff against Tony Pack by four shots on Saturday at the Blue Course in Augusta.

Ward was opening the weekend leading with Pack and local player Frank Warren at 24. Ward would take the lead by himself in the second round by shooting a 25 to take a one-shot lead over Pack. Through two rounds, Ward was in at 49, Pack was in at 50, and Warren was alone in third at 51.

Pack came back to tie Ward. Ward fired a final round 26, but Pack shot 25 in the final round to force the playoff. In the playoff, Ward took a commanding lead and held on. After 17 holes, Ward was up four shots and Pack conceded the playoff. Ward would wind up winning the tournament and marks his first win since winning in Forest City to start the season.

Pack finished in second as a result. Warren shot 78, a career best on the Blue Course, to finish in the third position. Robert Johnson and Steve Lyon finished tied for fourth at 80. These scores also will carry over to Sunday's tournament as this is part of the six-round Georgia State Championship. The results of Sunday's event will be added to the results from Saturday.

Jeff Carr also picked up a win in Augusta for the APA Division. Carr won a close battle amongst three players and picked up a two-shot victory over Ricky D. Schults and Chris Hudson. Carr fired a final round 26 to pull away a final score of 85. Schults and Hudson finished at 87. These scores also carry over to the second day of the Georgia State Championship.

The next tournament will be Sunday, September 14, at 10:00 a.m. on the Blue Course at the Martinez, GA course.
