Allen Wall Defeats Robert Johnson in a Playoff for Victory in Forest City Open

Allen Wall
2003 Forest City Open Champion

23 March2003 - Forest City, N.C. - Scores on Sunday were much improved over the course on Saturday in Forest City as the players contended with beautiful and picture perfect skies. In the end, local pro Allen Wall managed to grab his first win of the season by winning in a playoff over Robert Johnson on Course 2 in Forest City 29-30.

Wall and Johnson each went toe-to-toe during play. Both shared the first round lead with Kevin Lacey at 26. Wall fired another 26 to temporarily separate himself from the pack and was holding a two-stroke advantage over the current state champion in Johnson. With scores that were much improved from the day before, there were eight scores in the 50's compared to just two when the leaders at the point were at 59.

Wall managed to fire a respectable final round of 30 to finish at 82, but Johnson came right back and fired a 28 to tie him at the finish, forcing the playoff in which Wall would take that. Johnson would take second after losing in the playoff, while Saturday's winner Greg Ward tied a charging Tony Jackson, who fired a final round 25, at third with a score of 84. Lacey came in fifth along with Rick Culverhouse at 88.

Donnie Carpenter pulled away from a three-man race in the APA by firing a final round 28 to win by three shots over Brian Hutchins. Carpenter became the only player in that division to break 30 in the tournament as he won his first South Carolina event since he returned from a long hiatus.

Carpenter fired rounds of 27, 29, and 28 to finish the afternoon off at 84. Hutchins finished in second for the second consecutive day at 87, and Todd Trent wound up in third at 90.

Special thanks go out to the Connor family for their hosting of the first South Carolina weekend on the tour. The tour will also return to Forest City in July on Course 1.

The South Carolina tour will resume action in Lumberton, North Carolina on the weekend of April 12 & 13. They will be combining with the North Carolina tour for the first time this season. Action will get underway on Saturday, April 12, at 12:00pm, while Sunday's tournament will be held on April 13 at 10:00 a.m.
