Greg Ward Wins 2003 PPA South Carolina State Tour Opener with Victory in Forest City

2000 PPA National Championship.

22 March 2003 - Forest City, NC - Greg Ward showed why he continues to be the South Carolina tour's most dominant player in their history. Ward led wire-to-wire to gain victory in Forest City on Saturday and posted a two-shot victory over Todd Fowler, Kevin Lacey, and local Allen Wall.

Ward shared the opening round lead with Andy Coradini at nine-under 27. Scores had been predominately high all throughout the day as the event was held on Course 2. Generally, events held in Forest City were on Course 1. This was the first tournament held on Course 2 since new carpeting was laid out just last season and also the first time in well over a decade that a PPA event was played on Course 2.

Ward managed to maintain the lead, thanks in part to a second round 32, but now was with Randal Smith as the two were the only players in at the clubhouse breaking 60. Ward found a way to end the tournament with sole possession of victory as he posted a final round 28 to make the margin of two shots.

Only four players broke 90 in this event. Ward shot 87 to win the first tournament on the South Carolina tour this season. Fowler, Lacey and Wall all finished in a tie for second at 89. Michael Hitt wound up in fifth at 91.

Chris Hudson received a huge gift from Brian Hutchins as Hudson records his first win of the year. Hutchins held a two-shot lead on Hudson with two holes to play and wound up in disaster. Hutchins bogeyed 17 & 18 to finish tied for first with Hudson and a playoff was in the makings. However, there was a discrepancy on the scorecard in his group and that prompted Hutchins to receive a penalty stroke added to his score and knocked him out of any chance of winning his first ever tournament in Forest City.

With the error included, Hudson shot 90 to win outright. Hutchins wound up in second at 91, while third went to Ricky D. Schults at 94.

In the first of four Match Play events played this season, Todd Fowler won over Michael Hitt in the Pro Division, advancing to the Final Four this summer, while Hudson won over Hutchins in the APA Division.

The South Carolina tour will complete its Forest City weekend on Sunday, March 23, at 10:00 a.m.
