27 September 2003 - Columbia, SC - Going into the final round of the final regular season event of the 2003 South Carolina tour season, Tony Varnadore was tied for fifth and three shots off the lead to three players. Varnadore turned in a final round 22 (setting a course record in Columbia) and snuck in his first victory of the season with a one-shot win over Randy Reeves.

Varnadore did open up with a one-shot lead by firing a 24. In second were five players, including Reeves and two-time defending champion Rick Culverhouse. The second round saw a change in the leader board as Reeves fired his second 25, along with Culverhouse and Andy Coradini, and was in at 50. Greg Ward, also tied for second, fired a 26 to place himself alone in fourth at 51, and Varnadore stumbled to a 29, but was tied for fifth at 53.

Varnadore turned it on in the final round. Varnadore set a Columbia course record by firing a 22, enough to escape with a one-shot victory. Varnadore won his first tournament of the season with a score of 75. Ironically, Varnadore's first and only win last season was right before the State Championship and this is the fourth time in his career that he has accomplished that feat.

Reeves finished in second at 76. Darrell Britt and Andy Coradini were third at 77. Culverhouse finished in fifth at 78.

At the same time, the APA Division was having their first of a two-day state championship. At the halfway point, Ricky D. Schults holds a commanding three-shot lead over Jeff Carr. Schults leads the way with a score of 78, with Carr holding to second at 81, and Larry Hoover has third to himself at 82.

The South Carolina State Championship will be played this Sunday, September 28, at 9:00 a.m. on Course 1 in Columbia.
