24 August 2003 -
Columbia, SC -
Rick
Culverhouse accomplished
a feat
that had not happened on the South Carolina tour since April 2002--win
back-to-back tournament on the same course. Culverhouse continued to
dominate the field of play by posting a three-shot win and became the
first professional player to shoot in the 70's for a 54-hole tournament
in Columbia.
Throughout the day, skies were overcast and seasonal temperatures
were in order, prompting lower scoring for this tournament. That was the
reason why 84 was the cash line, the lowest of the weekend.
Culverhouse started out the day with an opening round 25, good enough
to share the lead with
Rick Baird.
Both players had already won this weekend, with Baird winning the first
event and Culverhouse defending this one. Reigning South Carolina State
Champion
Robert Johnson was tied for third with
Dan Anders
after an opening round 26. Culverhouse then used the second round to
pull away from the competition. His second round 24 gave him a
three-shot lead on Baird and was in at 49, the first time ever that a
score was in the 40's for two rounds in Columbia.
The lead would hold and Culverhouse would walk out of Columbia with
his second straight win. A final round 28 was enough to finish the
tournament with a score of 77. Culverhouse grabbed his second straight
win and became the fifth person this season to win multiple times this
year on the South Carolina tour. Johnson fired his second 26 of the day
to vault into second at 80, while Baird wound up tied for third with
Tony Pack
at 81. Anders rounded out the top five finishing with
Tony
Varnadore and
Greg Ward
at 82.
Alabama product
Russell Taylor
completed a promising weekend by posting his first win in the APA
Division and placed his third consecutive top three finish. After losing
in a playoff and finished alone in second in both of Saturday's
performances, Taylor led wire-to-wire from the opening round and won his
first APA tournament by posting a three-shot win over defending champion
Brian Hutchins.
Taylor shot rounds of 25, 28, and 26 to finish the event with a score of
79. Hutchins finished in second at 82, and
Todd Trent
placed third on Sunday at 83.
This course will be contested later this season as the tour will be
playing its 17th annual South Carolina State Championship in September.
The next weekend on the South Carolina tour is scheduled for the
weekend of September 13 & 14 in Augusta, Georgia. Two separate
tournaments will be played that weekend and the combined score of the
two will be used to determine the Georgia State Championship, being
defended this year by Randy Reeves. All action is on the Blue Course and
will get underway at 12:00 p.m.
on Saturday, September 13 and 10:00 a.m.
on Sunday, September 14.
