Robert Johnson Wins 2003 Glass Bottom Open Title in Playoff over Tony Jackson

Robert Johnson
Winner of
2003 Glass Bottom Open

4 May 2003 - White Lake, NC - After thunderstorms ripped through White Lake overnight, conditions were less favorable early in the morning as overcast skies, coupled with dampness on the carpet, made play more competitive. Of the 33 professionals participating on Sunday, half of the field was separated by just six strokes.

Two of the players fought off for first place in a playoff after each shot 76. South Carolina product Robert Johnson dueled against another South Carolina player, Tony Jackson, the only addition that was not in Saturday's tournament.

Neither would grab the lead in the first round. Thomas Rawles got things rolling as a perfect back nine put him in a tie for first with Rick Rybaczek and Buddy Taylor at 23. Johnson was a shot off the lead, along with Tony Varnadore and rookie Bear Landin. Of the three leaders, only Rawles would turn in a decent round as he shot 26 to go in at 49. Johnson carded a 25 in that round to join Rawles for first place. Jackson fired a 24, while Landin posted a 26 to trail the leaders by one shot after 36 holes.

After two rounds, nearly half of the field was within five shots of the lead. But, Johnson and Jackson kept themselves in check in the final stanza. Jackson fired a final round 26 to catch Johnson, who posted a 27. Each ended up shooting a 54-hole score of 76, which matched Bob Haizlip's all-time record score set in 2000.

Ricky D. Schults swept the weekend as he won with a score of 81 for the second straight day. However, he had to hold on, contrasting from the previous day when he fired a final round 24 to win. Schults tied the course record, but set the APA record with an opening round 22 to lead by three shots over Steve Helton.

Despite a second round 28, Schults extended his lead to five strokes and hung on to win by one shot. Helton fired a final round 27, while Schults shot 31 in that round. Schults' 81 gave him his third North Carolina win, and third consecutive APA overall win. Helton finished at 82, while Donnie Carpenter ended up in third at 83.

As the APA cleared the course, the playoff got underway and Johnson started off strong. Through seven holes, Johnson was five-under, while Jackson had yet to taste an ace until he got to hole 8. Johnson made five in a row to close out the front nine with an 11 to Jackson's 16. On the back nine, the tide started to turn. Johnson bogeyed the opening hole on the back to drop a stroke of the lead and then couldn't find an ace again until hole 14. Through that stretch, Jackson cut the lead to two strokes, and then after making 15, his deficit was just one shot, but it was the closest he would come to Johnson.

Johnson made holes 16 and 17 to seal a two-shot win in the playoff Jackson. Johnson fired a 27 to take his second win of the season, including Asheboro back in March. Jackson was denied of his first North Carolina win since 1986 as a result.

Rounding out the top five in the Pro Division were Brad Lebo and Rick Rybaczek at 77, while a three-some finished at 79 for fifth, that included Andy Coradini, Bill Kirby, and Tony Varnadore. The cash line sat at 82, six strokes off the lead (the closest ever since the turn of the century in a field of 25 or more in a North Carolina state event). Tony Jackson earned the North Carolina State and Match Play spots, and Andy Coradini earned the two-day state spot that was available this weekend. With his sweep, Ricky D Schults earned his State spot in the APA Division.

Special thanks to John and Jill Womble, hosts of the annual White Lake weekend, for their hospitality and offerings for this weekend.

The North Carolina tour returns to action in two weeks as they head to Lynchburg and will be competing along with the Virginia tour on the weekend of May 17-18 on Course 1. Tournament action gets underway on Saturday, May 17, at 12:00pm and Sunday's tournament will be at 11:00am.
